Well in the fall I will be attending my senior year in highschool, and I need to make a decision on schools. I am looking to go into business and I think a golf career would be something to consider. I was wondering if anyone had any names of schools that deal specifically with golf course management/admin, preferably on the east coast. thanks in advance!

I'd say your best is goto school for management and start working at a golf course. Work your way up the ladder and learn the trade if you have never worked at one before. Lots to be learned. Not sure if there is any specific golf course management schools. I would think lots of experience will help and a lucky break or a few connections will help you land the right job.

one of the top programs in the country is at Penn State University with their Profession Golf Management program. A big plus in their program is an emphasis on the botanical aspects of growing grass which will be the biggest shift in the golf course management as courses go from plush high-maintenance water demanding monoculture grasses to bio-diversified drought resistant grasses (my donald trump golf of the future was all a stick) . Penn State is a tough school to get into but the best if this is what you're really interested in.

I dont know where you live, but in FL, there is a small school called Flagler College in St Augustine. They offer a degree in Sports Management. The reason it stands out, is because they have an internship program Wadsworth Golf. THey are a very large Golf construction company.

Thanks for the replies. I live in Maine, so it isn't exactly close to these schools, but that is what I would expect. I am currently employed on a golf course, which could possibly help me out.

I would warn anyone considering PGM programs. I have known several people who did it and ended up in other professions. Long hours which leads to a strained family life. Golf? Rarely get to play for fun. If you're single and love to be around a club all the time, go for it. No offense for those in golf management but you've got to really sit down and weigh the pros and cons. It's def not for everybody.

Tri-State University also has a good PGM program.

    • Is there a rule against these guys using their phones during rounds? There's no way I could just stand around waiting during these interminably long rounds when I could be watching earwax removal, cyst popping, or ingrown toenail removal videos like I usually do
    • Sorry, I meant Erik. I type faster than I think. 🤷‍♂️
    • I've never had my entire bag walk off before. One time (about 15 years ago) somebody did nick my range finder off my bag. I had a Bushnell Range Finder in the hanging clip-on hard-case thing on my bag. Then at the turn somebody snatched the rangefinder off my golf bag, left that hardcase behind. It happened while me and my group were inside getting hot-dogs and such. I've heard it has happened to others as well. Since then I kept my rangefinder in my golf bag's pouch for it rather than dangling on the bag in the hard case.
    • I disagree on this. Speed training is just moving something fast, it doesn't usually require much loading. This is why when you train for body building or upping your PB's on amount you can lift it doesn't translate to speed. Actuality they can interfere with the adaptation of one another.  Yes, generally weightlifting will improve grip strength. In a lot of cases grip strength is a limiting factor on your PB's on increasing weight. If your hands give out at 300-lb deadlift, but your hamstrings are good for 400-lbs you will never PB. That is why most people use grips when lifting, to eliminate the grip strength issue.  That doesn't necessarily translate to clubhead speed.  There are plenty of golfers, who have never touched a weight, can swing fast. I think grip strength correlates because when they test PGA tour players, they have been hitting golf balls for decades. It's something that gets developed over hours and hours of practice. When the grip strength trend was going on twitter/youtube last year or what not, they tested the grip strength of MMA fighters, many can't crack 120 lbs. They work out way more than me, I crack 125 lbs+ with my off hand. My dominant hand is 165 lbs.  You have high schoolers with 120 mph club head speed, who probably don't have that high grip strength yet.
