If i had a front view instead of a dtl view I could confirm what I think I see. Your take back looks really good until you get to the top of your swing. I know people have said that you go too far past parallel and I tend to agree... trust me... you wont lose any power at all if you start your downswing properly from a better position. Watch your head when you get to parallel then where it ends up when your swing gets past parallel. It looks like it is moving forward thus putting your head in front of the ball. This is going to keep you from hitting flush more often than not. Go to parallel... then stop.

Ok... here is where you fix the over the top and start putting the club into the slot. When you get to parallel... do not start the swing with your hands. Start your downswing with your hips twisting. This drops the club into the slot and keeps it on plane. You get a great coil and load on your backswing but when you overswing you are getting out of wack. If you have to exaggerate the hips just to get the feel ... I would suggest you do it with 50% swings. When you start catching it right you will feel it.

Hope this helps.

You might be going over the top because your wrists set very late. Try an earlier wrist set, which also may help you get into the slot. This drill is one of my favorites to feel how your arms and wrists should feel at the top.

You are very clearly heaving the club over the top. The reason for this is pretty apparent to me because you do the same thing that i used to/am working on not doing.

You overswing tremendously.

This image is where you are at the top of backswing

This is where you want to be:

You need to stop the backswing earlier because you are overswinging. This is also causing you to reverse pivot a little bit (you are dipping your left shoulder). It isnt impossible to swing from that position. I spent some time swinging with a huge shoulder turn...but all it does is cause inconsistency and ultimately hurt your lower back.

The overswing makes it very difficult to come in from the inside, as by the time your hips are ready to clear out...you arms are still trailing and youre unable to square the clubface and therefore causing you to slice the ball. Basically your natural timing because much more difficult to execute.

Look at your arms during your backswing and work on stopping your swing at that earlier position. This will allow you to start the swing with the and very easily come in from the inside. Take video of yourself with a shorter swing and keep reviewing it until you get to that ideal position.

Yeah I'm really trying to stop my backswing early but it really takes a lot of discipline and practice which I am trying to work on.

Will definitely try the drill.

Anyone read the analysis on Swingacademy? The swing plane he refers to seems very high.

How does one keep from overswinging? If one is very flexible and can turn the shoulders easily beyond 90 degrees seems it would be tough to control. How about hip turn? Surely that adds to the rotation. Would it be easier just to limit hip turn? It seems if one lets the hip turn freely and one is flexible a overswing is assured. I doesn't seem you would want to limit his shoulder turn if he is able to do it easily. Lifting the arms too much adds to an overswing I think? I am just asking these questions out of curiosity not because I think I have some particular insight on junki's issue.

Try thinking 75 percent on your backswing. You have good tempo to your swing, and it's nice and fluid...a lot of potential. You just need to not take the club back so far.

So less backswing will help with my over the top swing resulting in no more fades from my irons and woods?

« Keith »

in short, yes.

reducing your backswing will actually give you much more power, control and consistency (im referring to you in particular, some people need more shoulder turn, some less..you have plenty of shoulder turn but are simply overswinging). You have enough of shoulder turn and overall strength to hit a driver 300 yards or a 8 iron 160 without needing to turn as much as you are.

Just try it out out. Like CG031 said, think 75 percent.

I used to overswing as well, and when i made the adjustment...it felt like every shot was like a half swing...yet the ball was going the same distance, if not further.

The main thing though you will see is much better consistency in your ball striking.

in short, yes.

The swing I did in the video did feel like 75% so I guess I should think like 50% to exaggerate.

yes its going to feel very wierd in the beginning. I was turning my shoulders to 110+ degrees where the average tour pro is about 89. It took a lot of work and to trust that i dont need to turn so much to create power.

Take a video of yourself from the side view (so that when you are at address, the camera is pointing at your belt buckle) it will be more effective for you to see whats going on from that angle. You'll see where your hands are compared to where they want to be. Likely, your hands will be going behind your head , whereas you want to stop them well before that

I think I will take a Front View tonight and another DTL. Want to try the Adams 3 Wood that I bought.

Okay got a face view and another down the line from today. Tried working on stopping the overswing but failed miserably.

P.S. At address are my shoulders suppose to be stacked over my knees? Also, are my knees too bent?

ok here we go. Im going with the 'edit with paint then upload with photobucket' method. im open to suggestions on a better way of doing this

Follow the links in order. The critique is in the pictures. Green lines mean good...yellow lines are something to consider..red lines is what you need to fix. It'll make more sense when you look at the pics. Also, your finish is pretty good and will improve as your backswing improves.

Hopefully the technology works out. Let me know if the links go dead or if you cant read the writing in the pictures.

Im also open for suggestions for a better way to doing this. go ahead and PM me if you have better ideas

this is an edit: looks like the text may be a tad small. Next time i do this i'll make the font bigger. If you want me to email the actual pictures to you its not a problem.

Hey, do you have an account on Swing Academy? The website allows you to analyze the videos. Draw lines and such at any point in the video with comments to go along with it. I really cant' make out what you wrote in the pictures. Thanks a whole bunch for the help. Hopefully I can read some of what you have wrote for me soon so I can get to work on it.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
