New Putter or wedge? Which to add first?

So, the other day I thought I had my mind made up and was set on buying a new putter. Then, I remembered and realized I don't have any wedges in my bag other than the pitching wedge. I have a set of crappy Walmart clubs named Foremost and all that's in my bag is driver, 3-PW, 3 wood, 5 wood and putter. I hate my putter, it's too short and too light, but I also don't have anything good to use around the green, so I always either get stuck using my pitching wedge or snagging my friends 56 wedge if I'm playing with him (I know, some of you probably don't like that idea).

I figured I'd just ask here to get some opinions. What should I go with first, a new putter or one wedge (I can only afford one right now)?

Well, Putting is the club used most, and can be half of your score. I suggest a putter first.

Well, if you're a decent putter you can lag it close and knock it in for a two putt with a damn 2x4. Get the wedges first. I only have a 52, need a 56 and a 60. I would rather putt with ANY putter than not have a full wedge set. Cmon! These are your scoring clubs!

Well you say you can only afford one. How much do you have to spend? I picked up my 56 wedge for $49 brand new at a golf show. My 52 was $69.99. Both are $89 at most golf shops.

Well, if you're a decent putter you can lag it close and knock it in for a two putt with a damn 2x4. Get the wedges first. I only have a 52, need a 56 and a 60. I would rather putt with ANY putter than not have a full wedge set. Cmon! These are your scoring clubs!

If his handicap is 20+, it depends where he is struggling. I played for years with only a PW and SW.

Putting is definitely probably the weakest aspect of my game and something I feel that needs to be improved the most, now that I think I finally have my driver figured out. I usually end up with a lot of three putts. Hard to say if that's because my putting is bad or because I'm not setting myself up with a good wedge shot, but if I had to say, I'd probably say it was because my putting. I feel like my 9iron and wedge shots are usually pretty good.

I'd definitely suggest a putter. It's the route I took. Putter first and then added my wedges into my game. How much are you looking to spend? You might be able to do both.

Well, I was looking at the Odyssey White Hot #1 putter and that's running for about $119 at most places. I wouldn't like to go any higher than that right now.

I just replaced both but I purchased my putter first. Bought the wedges 4 months later though. So I say, go for both!

Drive for show, putt for dough

If you hate your putter then that is what you need to change 1st. You use it two times more than any other club, at least, during 18 holes.

You could get the putter of your choice, used, and still get at least some wedges:

My game basically can be summed up as poor driver, decent iron play, poor putting.

Go for the putter bud, it'll make a big difference for your confidence on the green. The feel of a high end putter is way better then a cheapy and it improved my game plenty. Putting can also sometimes be almost have your strokes in a round, very close none the less usually 1/3's for sure.

Have you tried looking on Ebay? You can get some pretty sweet deals on there. Last night I won an auction for a 56* Vokey wedge in oilcan finish. $33. You just gotta make sure you buy from reputable sellers. This Vokey is coming from 3Balls, so Im pretty confident that the club is what they say it is.
Ive been watching a few auctions on there for Scotty Cameron putters and they usually go for $150-$200, which is a little more than half what they cost new. I keep hoping to find a deal on a Circa '62 #1, but no luck yet.

Definately go putter first. I survived with only a PW for a while.

Get a good brand in "Good Condition". Won't look too good cosmetically, but it will work. Then you could also get a putter. Best of both worlds.

Have you thought about buying used from

callaway.com ? This is the road I took when I purchased my Odyssey. I got my in like new condition for $109. It was normally a $160 putter I believe.

      The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO

      Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.

      Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
