I was just at the local golf town trying 2 sets of Irons I was very interested in.

The Ping i10's and the Ping S58's.

I felt like I could hit the S58's so well, they felt amazing every time and I didn't miss hit one shot. They gave me an amazing feel but this brings the question.

Should I risk judging on how I like them from just hitting them on a range mat with tape on the face? Can the tape maybe make the club feel a little better when you hit it, or will it feel even better when the tape is off?

I'm planning to buy these next year or so and The best I can do is try them on a range mat. If I hit them fine there would there be any chance I could hit them well on the fairway?

Will I even be able to handle this type of iron?

Hey Dent-I know some of the local golf stores here will let you take clubs out for a round-any chance you can do that where you are?

The only golf shop around here is a huge store and the course I play at doesn't deal with ping.

Golftown will let you demo their clubs, but you have to pay $40, and then wait for them to be shipped to your door, and then at the end you have to ship them back. Its a real pain just to try clubs for a week.

I did it, and i think it was worth it. I really got a feel for the clubs.

However, if you really like a particular set of clubs, just pull the trigger. If you like them theres no reason you can't adjust to them. I did just this for a set of irons and driver. Can't wait to use them.

If they feel right to you, chances are your gunna like when you hit the course. The tape won't hide a lot of the features that club has to offer for you except of course spin a bit and sound. I give a thumbs to making purchase.

Sure. Most of the irons in Ping's lineup are forgiving, the S58's are no exception. If price is an issue take a look at the S59's. I demo both and found the feedback / playability to be similar.

IMO, it's fairly easy to judge a clubs characteristics by hitting off a mat……..however I avoid practicing off a mat like the plague.

My local Edwin Watts will let us take clubs home and demo for the weekend if we want.

The only catch is they put a hold on your credit card for retail price until they are returned - not sure if that is feasible for you or not.

Honestly Dent...

You need to stop asking if you could handle this iron. People need to stop acting like these Cut-Muscle clubs are so hard to hit - they really aren't. If you're under a 15 handicap, than you can handle them. If you can handle the price tag Dent, get them. Get custom fitted for the shaft and everything...probably should get stiff.

Word. I bagged the Cleveland cg2 "players irons" (which are a small cavity/muscle with a thin topline and little offset) when I was an unoffical 20ish. There was a slight learning curve for me, but I've come down to an offical 14.5 in 6 months soley off my iron play. With your handicap you'll have no problem at all. Don't believe the hype! You will focus on your shots much better, be able to work the ball if you like, and hit even straighter than you thought possible. And those specific Pings are one of the softest cast clubs I've ever hit.

Ok i had the same problem when i was getting fitted for my ping irons. And the 59s are from 2006, the 58s are from 2007, and ping is releasing the S57s in late 2008. The Ping Pros have the s57s in their bags, but you'd be surprised how many pros have the i10s in their bag, i.e. Chris Dimarco plays the i3s, cast. The i10s feel like blades, they give feedback, and the reason i chose them was distance. I couldnt hit the s58s as far as the i10s. They're both great clubs, and i dont know if you can go wrong. Definently get fitted, that helps a ton. Since you are a better player than i am, i would get the S57s, yes wait for the S57s.

Ohh man I think they 57's would be out of my price range, but those look sick. Funny you mention you hit the i10's further. I found to hit the s58's further.

I plan to get fitted and by next year or late this year purchase them off ebay. I don't mind getting a used set which runs around $600 on ebay.

Dent- That's why you need to go through a legitimate fitting session. A fitter who has heads with different shafts and flexes, or the new fitting system with interchangeable shafts and heads, will be able to help you find the right club. Remember, it's not just distance, its ball flight, launch angle, spin, etc.

Good luck!

Go into Ping's website and they have a section on demo days in your area. You just put in your postal code and it'll will give you future days within a certain radius of where you live. These days have the Ping reps there, and depending on the day, have a launch monitor there too. I do this with a local pro (about a 45 minute drive for me) and it is well worth it. No cost is involved in getting fit at one of these days either. You can try everything they have, get fitted etc... I wouldn't buy them only hitting them at the indoor monitor at Golf Town. Hopefully there is a demo day set up nearby for you. Good luck with it.

I recently hit the i-10s and the s58s too, the s58 were so nice I thought, but they sure do come with a big price tag though.
