Ok, so I haven't have had any lessons, nor will I be able to this year.

But I enjoy the game and am trying to learn. So after reading stuff on here and looking at golf magazine I realize my swing really isn't proper at all. I basically swing with my arms(and thumb) and not much shoulder or hip rotation.

In the article in golf magazine they said that while driving your left shoulder should end up under your chin on the backswing. And you back should end up pointing at the target. Now is this true for all clubs? In general, can that be applied to irons and wedges, or is that a different type of swing?

Same swing for all clubs, don't try to swing different for different clubs it will only mess you up. The driver you want to hit on your upswing, you do this by putting the ball up in your stance and also raise your left shoulder a little, but hte swing is the same. Hit all other clubs on your downswing, Best advice a got when I was new was to try to keep your left arm as straight as possible.

The backswing is initiated by your shoulders, which means you don't use your arms to lift up the clubs. Then use the momentum for the down swing which is started by your left knee/hips -> shoulders -> then arms.

The article you read on golf magazine is correct, but you need to know the whole process to achieve that instead of just getting your left shoulder under the chin. Generally, if you make a proper shoulder turn your left shoulder will always be under the chin and your back will face target at full turn. This is caused by upper body coiling while your lower body stays still. At this point you will feel like your upper body wants to unwind, which is good. Now you need to use that force for the downswing in sync with the order of backswing motion explained above. Yes, that's the swing you'll have to use for every clubs in your bag. Swing is unique like a signature, one to each own. Hope it helps.

The golf is a simple swing we make complicated. If you swing with your body and not just with your arms, the game would be much easier for you to play and you will be more consistant and hit the ball farther.

Try the following below:
1) start your swing slowly to ensure a full turn with your shoulder and hips.
2) try practice swinging with your feet together, this forces you to make a full turn.
3) have the back of your should face the target.
4) put a piece of tape on your right hit just above your pocket and when you turn your hips fully that tape should face down the line opposite of the target.
5) watch video of your swing and watch video of a full turn on the internet.

    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
