I've heard of using swing triggers to let your body know it's time to start the backswing, but does anyone use some kind of trigger just before the downswing?

I find that if I'm doing things correctly, feeling no tension in my arms, keeping my left arm straight and getting a full shoulder turn, there is an instant at the top of my backswing where the club feels completely weightless. It's at that moment that I start to rotate my hips around and start bringing the club down. When I'm able to do that, I can hit a great looking straight shot that feels completely effortless.

Rules question: is it legal to stop in the middle of a swing if you sense something is wrong? For instance, I'm at the top of my backswing but I don't feel my club go weightless, can I stop and set up again?

Its time to start the downswing when you feel your shoulders have stopped turning. Remember that you dont want to continue pulling with your arms once the shoulder turn has stopped.

And yes, you are allowed to stop the swing at any time. Tiger seems to do it once or twice a tournament when he gets distracted. In fact, i'd recommend that you would stop it if something feels uncomfortable. You dont want to put a bad swing on a ball...and especially you dont want to do it if you know its coming.

Re: the rules. It is only a stroke if an attempt is made to advance the ball. You can stop anytime during your swing. This rule also covers that jackass in every group that says "That's One!" when you start your set up and accidentally bump your ball off the tee. It is not an attempt to advance the ball.

When I see the clubhead out of the corner of my eye, I know its time to start my downswing.

Correct, Its not a stroke if you haven't swung, UNLESS you have already wiffed at the ball. In that case, yes, it is a stroke, because the ball moved after your first attempt to hit it on the teeing ground.

    • Day 5 (6 May 24) - focused on setup and proper alignment (non alignment rods) to mimic visual cues as on course…of course this is backyard so we are talking 50yds max.
    • Day 53. Played 9. Couldn’t find the bottom of the swing arc. It was bad.
    • Awesome, thank you very much. I ended up giving them a call and you are right. Got to try out some different clubs, the first suggestion was the Wilson Staff Launch Pad irons I believe, the hybrid irons. Personally I wasn't liking them all too much, however they were much better than the old '74 MacGregor blades I've been playing. Then I tried a couple others, I forget what the one was but the one I ended up liking the best was the Cobra Aerojet irons. Overall feel and performance was the best for me on these, I also preferred the appearance and sound of these. Bit the bullet.

    • Live Updates from the range! Open the club face at address, and trust that you’re gonna be able to get the face in a good position at impact. I don’t have to feel like I have to keep the face open throughout the entire downswing. The swing feels much more free-flowing through impact. Difference in ball flight is that previously it would be a low to mid trajectory that starts straight and draw left, or slight pulls. New ball flight are high push draws.  It’s kind of stupid. I feel like it should slice off the planet. I look up and it’s maybe a slight push. 🤣 Some distant wedge feels. More weight on front foot. Keep weight on front foot.  Pivot around left knee. Solid contact all the time.
