OK, I have read enough about the Reno tournament and the player with the publicity who will NOT play on the weekend, dress code at golf courses, and Jack vs. Tiger as THE GREATEST. The US Senior Open is going on, and "Chicken Hawk" shot 65 on Thursday, and followed it with a 69 to establish a 2 shot lead. I like him and always have. My son and I met him briefly in 1992 at the practice range at Harbour Town Golf Links. His caddy then gave John a golf ball. When we first got there, he was the only player on the range. We watched him for a while, and I told my son that he had a nice, smooth, compact swing. To be honest, I had NO clue who he was.

He missed the cut, and then won his first tournament the following week in Houston. That shows how up and down golf is-------------miss the cut one week, and then enter the Winner's Circle the next!!

Good luck to Freddie-----he has not yet won a PGA Tour Major (although he won the Players in 2005), so it will be nice if he can win this one on the Champions Tour.

I play occassionally with one of Fred Funk's college teammates. He said he's a good guy.

Driver: FT-5 9* Neutral
3 & 5 Wood: SuperSteel
Irons: ISI Beryllium Copper
Sand Wedge: Ben Hogan piece of
Putter: White Hot

Funk can win this week, but a senior major doesn't even compare to a real major.

I bet Jay Haas would trade all of his senior majors just to be in contention again at a real major.

Fred seems like a fellow who has his head screwed on straight. He's a fine player, disciplined and he has a sense of humor about himself ( see grass skirt incident ). And, after all, how can you not like a short guy named Fred Funk: my god, what where his parents thinking? Well then, they could have named him Richard and then the world would know him as Dick Funk.

Oh, I am so very sorry, but I just couldn't resist.

I agree. The Tour needs more characters like him. And, he is a great ball striker. Not long, as we all know, off the tee, but, oh, so accurate. He has the perfect game for a Senior Open, the way the USGA sets up the course.

Boy, I do jinx the players I root for. Fred shot a 75 and came in second. In the Women's British Open, I was rooting for Juli, Laura Diaz, Natalie, and Paula, and none of them even finished in the Top Five. I had better keep my mouth shut from now on, OR----------say that I am rooting for someone who I want to LOSE!! Congratulations to Eduard Romero----Argentina must be so happy. Last year, Angel Cabrera won the US Open, outdueling Tiger and everyone else, and now Eduard wins the US Senior Open!!

I dig the Funk, he hits many fairways. Or he used to. I can't say I've kept up with him on the seniors. As for Romeros, I dig Andres, I think that is his name?

Felt bad for Fred. Really wanted him to win this one. Seems like he's just a good genuine dude and a hard working golfer. Good luck next time, Funky.

I share your sentiments. At the beginning of this season, Fred said that he wanted to do well on both Tours, and he is doing that, although---NO surprise---he is doing better on the Champions Tour: PGA Tour 7 cuts in 13 events----------earnings of $27,283 Champions Tour 9 cuts out of 9 events---one 2nd place, one third place and earnings of $848, 643 One comment: a post was made by someone else that a Major on the Senior Tour is NOT a real Major. When Arnie, Jack, Gary, Lee, Raymond Floyd, Hale Irwin, Larry Nelson, etc went on the Senior Tour, they counted those Majors with just as much weight as the regular Majors, and they tried just as hard, against many of the same players they had competed against on the regular Tour.

Fred Funk was my "Sleeper" on my fantasy golf teams in the '90s. He always seemed to do better than average for a low-priced guy so I always had him on my team. I always thought he reminded me of Paul "Mr. 1derful" Orndorff from the WWF LMAO!
My Equipment:
Northwestern 3-, 5-, 7- and 9-wood;
Goldwin AVDP Irons (5-10 plus PW);
U.S. Golf 60 degree wedge;
See-More Putter; Bushnell Yardage Pro 1000 Rangefinder;Golflogix GPS.

i support fred cuz he is one of the pro-jesus movement golfers on the tour. it does kind of make you scratch your head and wonder though about the supernatural powers that be that christian golfers don't win more?

They will beat their swords into golf clubs and their spears into putters. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore. Old Tom Morris 2:4

Fred Funk is the man!! Ya gotta love him. I also feel bad for him, though taking nothing away from the Big Cat. Romero deserved this one.

Maybe they don't win so often because to them, there's more important things to tend to in this world than just their golf game.

    • Day 211 (29 Nov 24) - Friday men’s round albeit a solo foursome (temps in the 40’s, day after Thanksgiving and the average age closer to 75 - I’m a youngster at 65).  Interesting day of semi-solid play (8 of 18 GIR). Hit all four par threes in one (a first) - parred each; still had a couple 3 putt bogies; and blew up on 3 of the par 5’s (go figure)). The blow ups were some serious tree rattlers - amplifying how I got stupid and greedy instead of smart and content to just get back in the short stuff.
