Went to a Ping demo the other day and I really liked the weight of their blade putter (its heavier than my current one). I just didn't like the look of it at address (I lost the mini putting competition )

Question - how many of you use lead tape on your putter and has it made any difference (either for the good or the worse)?

I have quite a lot of lead tape on my putter, it's been on there for over 10 years so I am figuring that at some point yes it must have made a difference to me! If you already like the balance of your putter and it is going on to increase weight put it on evenly. If you put 5 strips on the toe put 5 strips on the heel or even better if possible put it all on the back evenly centred behind the sweetspot.

If you get it wrong or if you don't like it peel it off, just remember that what's on there at the start of a round can't be changed until you have walked off the 18th.

Another option if you want to increase the weight by a lot, more than is feasible with lead tape is to drill the head and plug with tungsten inserts again do it as evenly as possible. Unless you know what you are doing or you don't mind the possibility of trashing the putter it's best to get this done by a decent clubfitter.

Thx for the feedback - I'll leave the drilling to the clubfitter

But I'll definitely try lead tape first. Any others care to chime in? I guess this is a boring topic

I forgot to mention, if it's a face balanced putter check that it is still a face balanced putter after adding the tape. If you check and you have upset the applecart so to speak, fiddle around until all is well.

I buy the club based upon how it feels to me. If it doesn't work out, I get something else.

It takes a ton of lead tape (at least 30 grams i've heard) to change the playing characteristics of a club. So I would vote yes for adding lead tape for swing weight and feel. No for any other club to change the ball flight.

To each their own. I guess my reasoning is that while I

liked the way it feels, I wanna see if I can add lead tape to get the weight similar to that of the ping while keeping the same look when I peer down at the ball. I'm gonna need to research this a bit more (and possibly end up buying a new putter if the tape doesn't do it)...just interested in how it has fared for others.

No wonder there's so much on eBay!

So what happens if you get a new putter and the grip feels too thick, do you change it? Of course you do. So the new putter grip weighs 30 grams more than the old one and now your putter feels a lot lighter, do you add a bit of lead tape on the head to get the same feeling back? Just interested to know.

To some it may take 30 grams, but I can tell the difference in 10 grams when switching from one putter to another in succession. I like my putter to be on the heavy side, so I sent it in to the Scotty Cameron Custom Shop to have weight added. I have considered adding lead tape to my 2-Ball as there is a perfect spot for it in the cavity. I have not done so as yet because I feared throwing off the balance, but I guess that if pro's can do it to their equipment, then so can I.

I would say to give it a shot with the lead tape.

Undoubtedly you are right. I should have said 30 grams to change "center of gravity". I'm with you on it changing the "playing characteristics". Case in point: About 2 or 3 years ago I decided to go mallet. Bought a Ping CrazeE and fitted it for lie and length. But it just felt so heavy, compared to the Anser styles I had always played. And I'm a straight back and through putter so I knew I needed a square shaped grip to slow my wrists down. Long story short I added a winn grip that was much heavier than the Ping stock grip. This brought the swingweight down to where it felt like an Anser style. God I love my putter!!!!! I can't say it enough. Not because of the model, but because the feel and lie and length fits me.

If I ever change it would be for a Cameron and they feel way light to me, so i would be all over it with lead tape.
