I hit all of my other clubs straight and sometimes with a 5 yard draw. With the driver I hit slices, hooks, and sometimes a good shot. I want to get it re-shafted because I think the shaft is wrong for me. It still has the stock shaft on it. My swing speed with a 5 iron is 95 mph. So I have the hyper x 6.0 shafts on my AP2's. I was wondering if anyone has a steel shaft on their driver or knows anyone that does or if it a good idea or not. If not What would be a good shaft for me. My ball flight is fairly high, and my swing speed is fast.

I'm using a stiff shaft.
I'm just looking for accuracy right now. I don't care If I loose 20 yards I'm not worried about distance.

I would try using an XStiff before steel.

I have a steel shaft on my 3 wood not my driver, but of course it's top flite and hte shaft is stock so it's not exactly what'd u say is high quality. When your swinging it though everything feels great i like the feel very much, but when i connect with the ball/make a divot the flex is greater then you would expect for a steel shaft. All in all i get great distance when i connect but the accuracy i'd have to say your better off with a graphite still. Maybe get a heavier shaft?

All I'd have to say is be careful, when dealing with graphite, on sticking to "regular", "stiff" or "xstiff". There was an article not long ago in...Golfweek maybe? about how there's no consistency between shaft manufacturers on what stiff or regular constitute. A similar shaft reaction may be considered regular to one shaft manufacturer and stiff to another.

Hope that makes sense...now it'll bug me as to where I read that article.

**EDIT**

Ha! I found the article I was thinking of right after I hit the post button:

Your swing seems to be pretty fast. If you want it to go straight try a XS flex. If the XS seem not too stiff you can tipped it to a XXS

I recently, in a fit of frustration, had my Ping G5 reshafted with DG X-100 at 43 1/5" and a D-3 swing weight. My objective was to get a shorter, stiffer shaft for better control. It did the trick, I'm able to keep it in play much better than the old longer shaft (Aldila NV 75g stiff). There is some distance loss, but not much.

However, I have to swing really hard to hit the club well. If I were to try again I'd get a slightly looser shaft, or tip the Aldila and put it back. The good news is the experiment only cost about $30 and I still have the old shaft if I want to put it back. I'm keeping the driver the way it is, but I have been fitted for a new driver. Shorter, stiffer shaft than the old G5, longer and more flexible than the new G5. My hope is that I can keep the new driver in play when I rip it, but also be able to hit it well when I smooth it.

I'm really curious about this too. I can't seem to hit the driver nearly as straight as my irons and hybrid. Even when I hit it well it takes off at a slight angle to the right. It doesn't hook because it travels in a straight line, it just takes off right and I can't figure out why. Anyway, I'm really curious about trying a steel shaft in a driver and seeing how that would go...

If it doesn't curve at all, but goes straight to the right, then it has nothing t do with the shaft, but it is because you swing path is too much inside to outside.

But on topic, I would suggest trying and X-Stiff shaft before anything else, or get fitted for a driver.

Here's what I play:

I've been thinking about this too, as I hit my old Callaway War Bird 5 wood like a dream with slight draw, and it has a steel shaft in.\

My G5 has an Aldila NV64 Stiff shaft in, and whilst I can hit it well, I can also push/cut them easily too.

hmmmm......... *thinks*

In my Bag:
909D2 10.5deg DFX Stiff
WarBird 5 Wood - steel shaft.
Titleist AP2 3-PW
Vokey Spin Milled 54 & 60deg 2 Ball Ball : ProV's.

Don't re-shaft a graphite-shafted, titanium driver with a steel shaft--trust me, I've done it twice. You'll love the first three swings with it until you notice that it's about 20 yards shorter than it was with the graphite shaft. The weighting just feels weird--think heavy shaft, light head. Just look on Ebay and find something used; preferably something that came originally with a steel shaft (975 D had a few as well as the old Cobras). Or have a club builder make you a cheap component head, weighted correctly with a steel shaft--should come out less than $100 for sure. Best of luck and let me know if you ever find the PERFECT driver!!!

i would get fitted for a graphite shaft from golfsmith or something. Remember, Tiger Woods and John Daly both use graphite .. why can't you? Even the long drive competition hitters hit graphite.

i used a stock shaft maybe 2 rounds in my Ping G10 .. very incosistent ..

I got the UST Proforce listed in XStiff .. i have no issue with the shaft now and hit it very consistently.
