With golf tryouts starting monday I need help and quick. Went to the range today but all my irons felt like i was hitting the middle or upper half of the ball with the bottom of the club. The ball was going in the air but with no distance at all. Can any one give me some tips to get rid of this?

Check your ball position and make sure your practice swing is just like your regular swing. "Take your practice swing with a ball in the way." So to speak.

Sounds to me like you are topping the ball. It may be getting some air as the ball is bouncing off of the turf and rolling a bit. First of, just relax. You may be putting extra pressure on yourself as you know that tryouts are soon. Concentrate on keeping your head down. When I start looking to see the ball I start hitting thin shots. You could also practice some chipping. A chip is just a shorter version of the full swing. If you are hitting your chips well, then progress to a longer swing until you reach a full swing. Just relax though, and good luck in your tryouts.

Confused on what you mean. Could you elaborate?


When I used to have this problem, I would focus on keeping my eye on the ball during the swing and maintaining my body position. Shortening my swing up would also help me accomplish this as I have the tendency to rise up a bit when I am swinging a bit too hard.

Sounds like you're hitting thin, probably by bouncing into the ball. I'm sure the pressure of tryouts has you looking up for the ball flight. This just means you are committed to making the team. Now be committed to the shot.

You can keep your head down during the shot, or you can hang your head low after the shot, I prefer the first. Keeping your head down is an old maxim, but really the idea is that it keeps your spine angle intact. I have this problem on the range sometimes, and I just focus on firing down into the ball with my right shoulder. Whatever mechanically helps you, go with it. Just know that if you commit to the shot, and stay in the shot, the ball will come out with authority. Good luck.

    • Day 1: After a long practice layoff due to injury, vacation, winter darkness, and work stuff, I'm trying to start back up again. Today I just hit balls with keys from my lesson 6-ish weeks ago; neutral grip and centered turn. Gonna work with that for a few weeks, see how it goes, and then get a lesson scheduled.
    • It’s not live on free to air tv in the UK, and hasn’t been since 1995. ( I pay a subscription to Sky for generally good golf coverage). There are limited highlights on the BBC for some golf events, but that’s it. Are other/all PGA events on NBC?  Allowing ticket scalping is a systemic failure across sports and showbiz, which could be legislated against, but in the UK is not in any meaningful way. I don’t know much about the secondary market in the US or anti scalping measures.  Charging more to keep prices down is an interesting concept, in practice no doubt you are right even if It sounds a bit Catch 22  Do you think sports tickets and broadcast rights  should be sold on a purely capitalist basis, or is there an argument to say that some sports might benefit more from wider exposure and affordable access. ( golf in the US is apparently not one of these if tickets sold out at those prices so quickly)  Fans might benefit from cheaper tickets and in the UK at least, TV coverage that reaches a wider audience.
