Graphite vs Steel on irons (3-pw)

Neither is BETTER in general, jut better for certain swings, like people with swing speeds 80 mph+ should probably ue steel, because it offers more control at higher speeds, but people who cant swing that fast should use graphite because it will react better at slower speeds, and you have to take into account how strong one is, steel shafts are much heavier.

I use graphite because my swing sucks and I can only swing ~80 with driver. I think the choice is more one of tempo than of swing speed because x stiff graphite shafts are availabile. The biggest difference is the weight, which some people prefer. The choice just comes down to hitting both and deciding if the steel seems to offer more control due to the tempo change. If not, then go with graphite because it will give about 4 or 5 more yards.

Graphite feel to whippy to me for my irons, I feel like my hands are too far in front of the club for me. Also I would be worried about breaking them when tacking a divot. Steel is the way to go for me.

Steel generally has more control vs graphite, however new technology has made light weight steel shafts available, see below site:

In general the light weight steel shafts are between 79 - 83 grams and graphite is between 63 - 78 grams, so the weight difference is getting closer with light weight steel.

My next clubs will have these light weight steel shafts.

Steel. I value accuracy over distance any day. Plus, the steel is way more durable than the graphite.

I think it depends on swing speed and tempo. I play Tommy Armour Irons with stiff steel and X flex graphite in my woods. Cleveland Launcher 4 60 with a Harrison Striper J Graphite, Titleist 975F with Fujikura Speeder and Taylor Made FireSole with the Striper J shaft. I normally shoot in the 70-s to low 80's and i have a quick hard swing and this set up works. Tried Graphite in my irons and I just swing to hard. Jess

I understand how a graphite stiff would feel more "whippy" then a steel stiff due to the weight factor, but as far as flex goes, is there really a difference?

Also, why would you feel steel is more accurate then graphite?

Years ago I had a set of Bertha irons with their graphite shafts....firm flex.

I sprayed these suckers all over. I was a beginer as well and am sure that my swing was inconsistent as heck. My backswing speed and transition had to be very smooth for these to work well.

Changing to steel was a much better thing for me.

I've stayed with steel ever since and don't plan on changing anytime soon.

I do feel that there have been some tremendous advances in graphite shafts since those early offerings, though.
