Why is this difficult for me?

1.) cut off old grip
2.) strip all the old tape off
3.) take the grip, cover the hole at top and squirt a good amount of solvent inside
4.) while the club is locked down in a vise pour the solvent over the entire tape surface
5.) pinch the tip and slide the grip on

I did all of this and when I went to pinch and slide on the grip got on an inch and wouldnt budge at all

I just threw 20 bucks in grip solvent, tape and two grips out the window and I'm pissed!

Sounds like not enough solvent.

This isn't a putter grip, is it?

What type of grips? Unless you tore up the (new) grips, it doesn't sound like you've wasted anything (yet.) If the grip is stuck at the 1 inch point, it shouldn't be too hard to slide a thin shim or screwdriver (gently!) under the grip and douse the tape with solvent to make it slick again. Then pour more solvent over the tape and make sure the rest of the tape is completely saturated. (Run your hand over it to make sure it is slippery.) Make sure the hole in the top end of the grip isn't blocked (pressure build-up would make it hard to slide the grip on.)

I literally used a quarter of the bottle on one grip...

double sided tape used, quarter of an inch at the end wrapped inside the shaft (I must have watched 20 videos on how to do this)

It could be that there wasn't enough solvent inside the grip. I normally hold both ends shut and give the grip a shake to make sure the solvent covers the entire inside of the grip. It could also be that the grips you were using were incorrectly sized for the shaft or the tape you put on, although this is doubtful.

Yep, that's all it is. As I said in post #2: not enough solvent. I don't care if you use a whole bottle - if you don't get enough

in the right spots and then act quickly, you're not using as much as you think. I just put a bunch in the grip, swish it all around, pour it over the entire length of the tape, and immediately slide the grip on.

Exactly how I do it. Doesn't really need very much solvent at all. Just enough to coat the inside of the grip, and soak the tape enough to stop it from sticking immediately.

Yep. Unless (as J.D.G. mentioned) there was an issue with incorrect sizing, that's definitely a solvent problem. You shouldn't need anything close to a 1/4 bottle (unless we're talking about an eye-dropper bottle).

Maybe when you poured the solvent over the tape, you didn't get any on the underside of the tape? Maybe you tried to "push" the grip on instead of gripping it around the tip and pulling? (Although, from the original post, it sounds like that wasn't an issue.) Or maybe you had some small problem (like a sticky spot) and as you addressed that, the rest of the solvent dried? (It's a saturate-tape-and-slide-grip-on in one fluid motion procedure.)

If you can get the grip off (shim under it gently and squirt solvent in), I would strip the tape off and start over just to be safe.

  • Put tape one.
  • Squirt solvent in grip, cover both holes and shake.
  • Pour solvent over new tape.
  • Stroke (sorry, couldn't think of a better word) shaft to make sure solvent covers all tape.
  • Align grip and slide (not push) grip on in one fluid motion.
It sounds like you know all this, but sometimes it helps to cover it again.

Oh, and make sure when you do it that you slide the grip on, apply force as far back on the shaft as possible, if that makes sense. Basically, don't keep pushing the bottom of the grip, or you could end up with it stretched out.

The grip does look pretty stretched where you're putting it on. Double check the sizing.

Assuming its your irons that your regripping, have you got core 60 grips or core 58? Your iron shafts need grips with a core size of 60.

It looks to me like you have the wrong size grips. Judging by the label, those grips have a .58 core size. I'm guessing that your wedges have DG shafts, which would give them a butt end diameter of .60. This means you need grips with a core size of .60.

Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.

That last point is huge....you don't want stretched grips.

I used to do my own.....but stopped. For $1 per grip....I'll gladly pay the fee. I found a golf shop that is reasonable on the grip prices. The only downside is driving over there and being without my clubs for a couple of days.

No biggie, though.

It is cool to do it yourself, though. Pride in knowing you did it.

Dub-

To avoid stretched grips, just mark the location of the grip on the shaft with a wrap of masking tape. Then you can put an alignment mark on the tape with a Sharpie. When you slide the grip on, you can tell where it should be both length wise and centered. If you do that, it's pretty easy to recognize if a grip is bunched or stretched in an area, and also easy to smooth it out.
