Too bad the original Ganja-thread was closed, because they are reporting today on the Golf Channel that Michael Phelps is taking up golf. Hmmm.

Says he wants a challenge.

Why was that thread closed anyway?

That thread was ridiculously written. Threads that have no legitimate reason for being posted often get closed or deleted.

Make him race a boat then... theres a challenge for the new american idle. I can't even stand watching the olympics on NBC, because you won't be watching the olympics just more interviews on him... leave the poor guy alone already and show some sports!

swam competitively while younger. have you ever done the butterfly? it take quite a bit of athleticism and application of technique

The turns alone take a lot of athleticism. Especially the freestyle flip turn and the backstroke turn.

But yeah, to master the butterfly you definitely need some skills. Even so, not sure how well this will translate to golf. The guy definitely has some attitude and determination though. Maybe too much, when I heard him talking about taking on Golf as his next challenge, I detected a touch of Ryan Leaf style hubris.

how much will it translate into golf, exactly, as seen in so many other superstar athletes having troubles with golf... michael jordan, charles barkley

still, babe didrikson excelled to the highest levels of the game after her olympic experience and so it is possible. phelps would only be doing it again should he become a champion at golf. about phelps' hubris and comparison to ryan leaf, not comparable, the guy is too much of a gomer pyle

T...I detected a touch of Ryan Leaf style hubris.

let's all agree this should be the last time we question the athleticism of someone with 14 career gold medals hanging around his neck or associate him with one of the biggest busts in nfl history...

i'd have to think his olympic training makes him a bit more flexible in the shoulders, hips, legs, and just about anywhere else that would likely give him one or two physical advantages over a couple hackers on here...

Yeah, ok... sorry about that. That little interview was really the only footage I've seen of him speaking.

It would be interesting to see him golf, he's got a odd body form for being 6"4. His arm span is abnormally large and is taller then his body head to toe. But don't let his massive height decieve you and make you think he'll be off balance, he has size 14 feet.

I dont think he meant he would try to be a professional golfer.
I think he is going to do it for fun.
I watched the interview and although he hasnt played golf he still had an understanding and a respect of how difficult the game can be. Thats more then I had........I do know now.

Golf is the cruelest game, because eventually it will drag you out in front of the whole school, take your lunch money and slap you around. ~Rick Reilly, "Master Strokes," Sports Illustrated

Being a swim coach, I know how much athleticism swimming takes. I did notice however, after picking up golf, I've learned how to control my athletic strength better, using my whole body for leverage at better efficiency. A good athlete in one sport should be still be a fairly good athlete in another and cross-training only increases your athletic dexterity.

    • Day 22: mirror work for a while. Working on my elbow in the downswing - keeping it in a better position.
    • Day 36 (16 Dec 25) - continued the exaggerated left foot weight shift trigger adding some easy low flighted pitches with the 5h and a few putting style bump and runs with the 5h as well.
    • Day 442 - 2025-12-16 Got some swings in at an indoor academy a little south of Erie.
    • Has anyone played the new Maxfli forged irons? For the first time in I don't know how many years, they have come out with new clubs. From what I read, Maxfli was bought by Taylor Made a long time ago which then took all of their ball making technology and patents in order to get into that market. The club business was left to whither and the reorganized company, now a part of Dicks / Golfworks / Maltby, is producing these new clubs. (Their Tour X balls which I play are really good.) Anyway, I tried them both out at Golf Galaxy. There's a player's distance iron (XC-3) and a blade (XC-2) and both feel really, really nice, almost "Mizuno-like" in their soft buttery feel and they're a bargain at $800 for a set. I'm planning to ditch my Titleist's and want to go back to a forged iron. I almost pulled the trigger on the Mizuno Pro-245's last summer, but a damaged tendon sheath in my finger combined with a back injury messed up my golf game so I held off. Now the Pro-245's are no longer available, soon to be replaced by the MX-15. (At twice the price of the Maxfli's...that's what got my attention in the first place.) If anyone has played with the new Maxfli's or just tried them out like I did, let me know what you think.
