My step dad gave me a used set of Cutright irons. They look to be 10-20 years old and are cavity backed. Very plain looking. They have been re-shafted with True Temper stiff graphite shafts, although I can't tell which specific model.

I'm thinking about upgrading to either Callaway X-20s or Adams a3s. I'm curious as to whether I would see much of a difference in performance. And another question is, should I take these shafts and put them on the new set, or should I go with the OEM steel/graphite.

I hit my 7i about 155 but generally have terrible consistency with finding the sweet spot. I'd like a game improvement club, but I don't want to outgrow them too soon. I'm leaning towards the X-20s right now for that reason.

Anyone ever heard of Cutright irons? Worth an upgrade?

Firstly, what you said about your current irons doesn't sound right. As far as I'm aware, True Temper don't, and never have, made graphite shafts.

Upgrading will give you greater forgiveness, as well as the chance to have your irons correctly fitted. This will tell you what shafts you need, and a good fitter should be able to tell you what irons would suit you best. Try out a load of different irons to get a better idea of what is right for you.

Yes, most definetaly go to a Golf Galaxy or Golfsmith and try out all their irons, and then I would buy the ones that feel the best to you.

If my memory serves me True Temper actually makes graphite hockey sticks for companies so your kind of not right either.

True Temper does make graphite golf shafts, one being a fairway shaft called a Bimatrix (a graphite shaft with a steel alloy tip).

I went and hit a few different clubs at Golf Galaxy today. Specifically Cleveland Gold's, Callaway X-20's, and Adams a3's. I was definitely more consistent with the Adams.

My issue now is shaft flex. I don't really have a specific "swing speed." My 6i speed ranges from 65-90 mph, depending on how hard I swing. I tried both the stiff and regular steel shafts, and they felt totally different. The regular was a true temper dynamic gold, but felt really whippy right before impact. If I swung around 70-80 mph, I could make great contact. Any faster and it started to hook. With my current stiff shaft I have to swing 85+ mph to get pure contact, but I lose my consistency.

Would it be better for me to get the "whippy" shafts and just tone down my swing to about 85%? If it makes a difference, I felt the shaft start flexing when the clubhead was about 3 feet away from the ball, and then it would swing back and smack the ball at impact. It just feels really strange and new to me, but seemed to make my contact easier.
