Back 8 years ago I was fitted for a set and I would avg 97 for my swing speed with a 5 iron. I know my swing has gone down and my distances are about 10 yards shorter now compared to back then, however I am a better player now. I love playing the Pro V model...if I use a stiff shaft, should i play the v1 or v1x? Guess I want some help in using the correct ball. Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated, thanks.

I know Bridgestone has a quick and dirty quiz on their site to help with ball selection. Not sure about Titleist or the others.

You really just need to test each ball and see which one works best for you. My standard gauge is to hit a full wedge into a green and see what the ball does. If the ball doesn't roll forward, and basically stays within a few feet from where it landed, that is the ball I want to use. For me, it is the higher spin balls like the Pro V1. Although, a couple of courses that I play, the fairways and greens are so good that I can't keep the V1 from spinning back too far so I use the V1x at those courses.

There is really no magic formula. Just trial and error. I have a friend who doesn't swing as hard as me, or hit it as far, or hit it as high, but he uses the V1x because he hits the ball in such a way, he produces a ton of spin. It is more about how you contact the ball and what you want the ball to do when it lands.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Well generally I use the v1x and I played Tan-Tar-A this past week and I was getting the ball to spin or stop within a few feet of my divot, so I guess that is what I am wanting,,stopping spin and not rolling alot. I just didn't know how big a difference the v1 and v1x had. I agree, trial and error seems to be the ticket, thanks!

97 with a 5 iron? that's WICKED fast! your 6 iron must be going like 200 yards on carry alone.. crap! that's like close to my driver ss.

i think at that speed you can pretty much compress anything... i'd say if you want the spin..go wtih the regular prov1. the v1x is for distance you lose. with that ss, distance doesn't mean much anymore b/c you'll get it out there. i'd go with feel over distance for you. have you tried the new nike one platinum? pretty good ball. and the taylormade tp's with ldp are cool too.

Unfortunately, speed doesn't always translate to distance. I am at 99 and with a 5 iron and it only goes 190ish.

Regarding the golfballselector.com site, use promo code OFFER300. I found this on some other sites and it is still valid.

you still have more than enough ss to compress basically any ball. i'd take that and get a ball that's money with the short game...so i'd personally stick to a pro-v or a nike one plat

That promo code is what I used, and it worked great.

What kind of ball did it fit you too? It just seems weird that they can fit the right ball for me with just some information over the internet. Plus you pay for it.

DRIVER - SQ Sumo2 5900 10.5*
3 WOOD - Wrath 15*
HYBRIDS - Wrath 3I 18*/4I 21*
IRONS - Wrath 5-PW
WEDGE - 60*PUTTER - Callie 35"BALL - Juice 312 #4's

They fit you best on tons of information that you enter. They base it on percentages and then list top 20 balls in order based on percentage. It is a very precise system that works quite well.

    • I had a few tweeks in the bag. I took out my Mizuno pro FliHi 3 iron replaced it with a Titleist GT2 7 Wood. what a change that is, so easy to hit, it goes so high without it ballooning on me. I couldn't get rid of my callaway woods ( Rogue ST Max LS ) but changed the shafts to Diamana BB 63 stiff for the driver and 73 stiff for the 3 wood. Than i got myself a new putter Odyssey S2S jailbird yes i joined the centershaft family
    • First off all i think you should use the same ball all the time. We all strive for consistency on the course, the only factor you can be sure it will be always the same is your ball if you always use the same. So i think we should always use the same. I recently switched from Titleist Pro V1x to Srixon Z-Star Diamond because it i get a bit softer feel around the greens and same results on driver and irons
