Breaking Clubs Unintentionally

Are you leaving your golf clubs in your car and letting it get hot? This sounds like you're overheating the clubs and letting the epoxy melt.

I just answered ks8829 on that question. However, my shaft broke right where in inserts into the hossel. So it seems the epoxy is holding up just fine. These were all metals with graphite or composite shafts.

I have broken three over the years, all unintentionally. The first was a 3 iron on the tee. I swung, then hit the ground and it just snapped. The second was a PW a few years later. I think it got fatigued from hitting on the mats as I used it quite a bit the day before while practicing. I had a third shot on a par 5, hit a bit fat and the head went rolling down the fairway, going almost as far as the ball. It was really a love tap on the ground. The third was a second shot 8 iron. I'm not sure I hit a bit fat or it broke on ball contact but I hit a groundball that found it's way onto the green. Died for a good cause. The first two I tossed. I never used a 3 iron since and I had a substitute for the PW. The 8i got reshafted.

I remember back several years when the Great Big Bertha or was it the Biggest Big Bertha came out. The light gray shaft (Callaway) was breaking off above the clubhead on a number of guys clubs. I had one happen to me, too.

I took it back to the pro shop where I bought it and they said that it was a very common occurance with this club and they exchanged it right there on the spot....brand new club in return.

Callaway does have super customer service.

I've never heard of a club falling apart when the head cover was removed. Most likely the driver was somehow damaged in the bag....door or trunk struck it.....fell over.....etc.

My crowning achievement, I took my bag out of the car and set it down beside the car near the passenger door. Started working on the car and eventually needed a part so jumped in car, cut wheel hard left to back out of driveway and ran over my bag. Wiped out bag, driver, woods, and three irons ... ouch!

I've broken two, one Cleveland Driver and an Adams Fairway 3wd. Both broke the graphite shaft cleanly at the hosel. I had the Adams for about 1 week, and used it on the driving range once. I think both breaks were caused by hiting mats at the range, since I was bottoming out before the ball quite a bit back then.

I cave the face of my driver in every couple of years.

    • Interesting changes. The idea of relegation and promotion have always been there in a different form (getting and losing your card etc and qualifying for bigger events) but it looks like they want to define it better for top tier events. The Tour has always had A and B level events (and even lower). It will be interesting what they choose as the Challenger Series events and whether some tournaments go to the Challenger Series that used to be prestigious. Not sure how the networks will take to this knowing they have “Challenger” Series events defined that way now. Also, I’m not happy that John Henry and Theo Epstein are involved. Look what Henry has done to the Red Sox.
