I'm just wondering how accurate these little things are and if anyone really uses them. My dad was given an electronic one for his b-day this year. I was at their house tooling around with it the other day.
It measured my driver ss at 110 and my iron speed at 87.

From Erik's 2.4 - 2.5 yards of carry/mph swung, it seems accurate for my drive but not my iron.

on a day with no wind, straight away no elevation change, my best drive has gone 290 (really catching it good), and the swing i took with my driver was the best one out of all my swings...that was controlled and not gorilla swinging.

BUT my iron speed i think is smoother and slower than 87.
it says at 87 mph your 6 iron carry should be 180 yards. but when i'm 180 - 190 out, I'll take a 5 iron. 4 iron is 200 and 3 is 210 - 215 at most.

have any of you guys tooled around with one of these before? If it's accurate, i wanted to measure to see if certain training exercises we're doing at the gym are really helping as my trainer says he thinks they are.

The 2.5 yards per mph probably only applies to driver.

A distance per mph doesn't take into account changes in launch angle, so I guess its a rough guide based on driver loft.

I've used the Speed Stik and that was pretty accurate. Are you referring to the one Camilo Villegas endorses?

Yes.

FWIW, it's not "my" guide. It's a general clubfitter's rule: 2.4 to 2.5 yards of carry per MPH swing speed under

ideal launch conditions . In other words, you should get at most about 2.4 to 2.5 yards of carry per MPH (at sea level). Anyone claiming to get otherwise is likely exaggerating (or plays golf in Colorado). If you get less than 2.4 to 2.5 yards per MPH (again, just carry), then you either make poor contact, have the wrong shaft, or have poor launch conditions.
