I was reading another thread about how to get a ball to back up on the green and it said to open the club face and pinch the ball. My question is, if I open the club face won't my ball fly to the right on impact?

Also, I bought a new VOKEY 60*WEDGE and am going to try using HX HOT BITE balls and start to practice my shots onto the green. 1. making the ball land and stop. 2. making the ball land, stop and back up.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

You can make the ball spin backwards or side ways if you close the face of your wedges. I play a short par 3 and the pin is under trees to the left of the green, so I play a draw shop and it lands and spin left toward the hole.

I also notice if I open the club face that my ball will go right so I aim left and compensate for the ball going right. I also use this technique to take some distance off a club, Hubert Green was famous for this type of shots and the ball flight high and lands softly.

You aim your feet left to compensate (open your stance).

As a 14 handicap, no offense, but there are probably better things for you to work on than getting your ball to spin backwards, particularly "greenside" if the thread title is what you meant.

It doesn't happen with a bunker shot, so why would it from the fairway? Iacas is right - you open your stance too.

Yes, I meant to title this post "Greenside ball questions". Sorry for the miss spelling.
Actually, my greenside game is what is holding me back from improving my game and handicap.
Tomorrow I get to try this advice and my new SPIN MILLED VOKEY and the HX HOT BITE ball. I can't wait. I will let you guys know how it goes. Thank you for the advice.

You won't get a ball to backup hitting it greenside. Only on 3/4 and full swings. best you'll get is a ball that checks up a bit, closer you are to the green, the less it will check.

Opening up the clubface will actually cause the ball to check less because you are increasing the loft. Flop shots don't spin back. But as you open the face, you need to rotate your stance more open thus aiming further left. Just remember to swing along your aim/feet path and not at the target. An easy rule to remember on how much to open your stance in regards to how open the clubface is: keep the leading edge perpindicular to the target.

You'll get more action on the Hot Bites than you would on the Freaks.

I played with the VOKEY and the HX HOT BITE balls and things went really well. I wasn't able to make the ball back up, however I was able to stop the ball on a dime a few times. The VOKEY scuffed up the balls pretty good. They are still good for nine holes or so.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
