Soaking club in Coke?

I've heard stories about soaking your wedge in Coke (the rusting wedges). Does anyone know first hand what actually happens to them?

They can't be a chrome wedge.
I do it to my Oil Cans all the time.
It gives it a great raw finish look.
Then they rust again and you do it all over again.

The wedge I want to do to it is a Cleveland 588 wedge. It is rusted, so it's safe to soak it?

The real question is why someone would use Coca-cola when they are literally surrounded by more effective -- and less expensive -- rust-removing agents. You can buy various acids, including phosphoric, from Home Depot... and probably already have a few around your house.

The best, I have heard, is a steel wire brush. Product wise, everyone seems to use Naval Jelly, followed by a rust inhibitor. A trip to the hardware store seems more effective than the grocery store.

I was thinking the same thing...$2 2 liter of coke...and you can drink what you don't use. Plus it does all the work for you. Put it in a pan with the wedge and soak it overnight. No rubbing. No wirebrushing. Just wipe it dry.

I don't know why someone would spend so many hundreds on clubs and green fees and whatnot, then cheap out on cleaner.

Coke: cheap, simple, doesn't seem to work even an eighth as well... it all makes sense.

I bought a VOKEY wedge about 1 1/2 weeks ago, it has an oil can finish. I noticed on my round yesterday that it had a touch of surface rust on it. I want to remove the rust, but won't soaking it in anything take off the oil can finish?

Just keep it clean and dry. I've had my SM Oilcan for 6 months and the finish is perfect everywhere except obviously the face and sole. Just wipe it dry after using/cleaning.

To spot clean that surface rust spot just use water and a towel. Once it's off, just keep it dry and it won't rust. Rust needs 3 things- oxygen, water, iron.

Absolutely not, rust does not provide more spin.

Two responses:

1. There is no need to do anything to your wedge beyond getting the dirt out of the grooves with a towel or brush. If they rust, they rust, it is neither beneficial nor detrimental to how they perform. If its a matter of appearance you need to worry less about what it looks like and more how to hit it.

2. Oh my god, after numerous discussions on this topic, did somebody actually just say AGAIN that rust increases spin?!?!?!?!
