I don't see why they wouldn't be worth keeping/playing. I've played irons that were beat up far worse than those. I can't tell real well from the pics but they sure look like they'd be perfectly functional. From the sounds of it, you may want to regrip them though.

Has a golf store? Very reputable? I'd probably push to return them since it doesn't sound like they were accurately described. Not that it would make any difference but can you post a link to the auction?

Looks like that guy sells lots of golf clubs. Doubtful that he bought them new. Your pics aren't too good either but they definitely look more used than 5 rounds, the changed grips kinda give that away. "very good" condition is subjective. Have no idea if they are worth $450. I would pursue a return.

Couple of tips:

- For that kind of money, you should insist on more and better closeup photos.

- When taking your own close up photos - use the macro function (button with the "flower" on it - most digi cams have that) and strong available light (no flash).

The clubs do look like they have been used for more than 5 rounds. I bought some 2005 Callaway X Tours and they had that same kind of wear in the middle of each club but it didn't effect the performance at all and that coating will wear off anyway so I didn't think it was that big of a deal. More importantly is the condition of the grooves. Are they are all in good shape or do any of them have knicks or gouges in the face which would be a deal breaker for me? I have big hands but my measurements for irons are Standard so I can buy clubs pretty much off the rack and they have those standard grips on them that make my hands cramp up so I cut them off right away for midsize so that isn't quite the giveaway that you may think. If he bought the irons new the grips should have been fitted to him with stock Titleist grips but he could have bought them off the rack and that not been an option. However if the grips are the same standard size that would have come with them new then that would likely prove they have more rounds in them than disclosed. Those clubs MSRP is about 900-1000 bucks if I'm not mistaken so if they are structurally sound I would roll with em and you'll forget about that if they are good clubs.

These clubs look fine to me. Maybe they've played more than 5 rounds, but after you've played 50 rounds with them, what do you think they'll look like anyway? As long as you're using them it doesn't matter. God - you should see my new irons after 3 rounds! Bag chatter is to be expected and does not make a scrap of difference. If you were to sell them, I hardly think you'd be making a "huge loss" as you say, because you bought them for a good price and could probably sell them for the same if not more. Just play them and enjoy them. "very good" is a description a lot of sellers use and can mean a season or more of wear. 5 rounds is probably pushing it but.....really......I think they look great in the photos!
You ask how much life they might have left in them. I'd say 15 years easily.

This has nothing to so with your clubs bieng in bad condition but why is your scotty cameron circa in the background but not in the bag.

That is an easy question to answer - he's gaming the true magic putter (Anser) and not the cheap knockoff.

That's the downside of eBAY (buyer beware) - this is why you ask for add'l photos, and more explanation before shelling out your hard-earned scratch.

Maybe the seller only used them for 5 rounds, but hit 100 buckets at the range. Maybe his friend also hit them for a few rounds, or that the seller was not the original owner. These are the "details" that can turn your 'Christmas in September' feeling into the 'your hot girlfriend just dumped you two days before the senior prom' one.

If you can get over the initial sick feeling, then maybe these will end up being great irons in the long run. Wish you well.

I'm sorry you're disappointed, but ebay can be a crap shoot. Those have obviously been played more than 5 rounds, but they don't look that bad IMO. Like someone else said, "very good condition" is subjective. And if you look closely, you can see the wear on the club in the picture on ebay. I say go play them and decide if you like them or not. Two or three rounds won't add much more wear than is already present. If you don't like them, you should be able to sell them for the same price if you were to sell them today.

i just checked out the seller. he has thousands of transactions, tons of golf equipment. there's no way he knows anything about the history of those clubs.he's pretty much a used car salesman of golf clubs.

Actually, I think you got a pretty good deal. I saw a used set in a pro shop a few weeks ago that my have been in marginally better shape and they wanted $650 for them.

If you shell out $800-900 for new ones they will look like that after 10-15 rounds including range practice. So, you got them for half price.

If it was me, I'd be happy... not sad

These irons should be fine if the grooves are still fairly sharp and clean.
Just replace the grips and you'll get loads of play out them.

Have all the irons got similar facial score-marks or just the 7-iron?

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
