A while back I used to play 1-pw (Ping Eye) , sw, and a Driver. I think Im gonna go with that strategy again.

Yesterday I bought a Titleist DCI (first gen) 1-iron, 16 degree. I cant wait to hit with it today! It was in great condition too, and it only cost 20 bucks!

Right now My Iron Setup is, 1-2 iron (DCI Gold) , and 3- pw (DCI 962).

woot!

Whats everyone elses opinions on playing the 1 & 2 iron? I have always enjoyed hitting them :)

In a traditional set of yesteryear, a one iron was 39 inches long and fairly hard to hit for most people. In a modern set the one is 40 inches. Good luck hitting that. Hogan probably would not want any part of it.

Everyones different.
I carry a 2 iron, its great when the wind picks up.
Hybrids and fairway woods have a place, but the typically higher flight you get with them is not what you want when the wind comes out to play.
My usual set up is driver, 3 wood, then 2-9 and 3 wedges (usually 46, 52 and 58) although I have a 56 and 60 that sometimes come into the mix.

Never tried a 1 iron though, don't know if I ever will. Maybe one day.

Back in the day anyone who thought they were a player carried a 1.
I went 1-sw and driver. Maybe a 3 wood. You had to be 50 for a 5 wood and 60 for a 7 wood or you were a puss. Now whatever works.

You just described my dad. But in his day, he WAS a player! Sometimes I find myself justifying my current club lineup to my playing parters. In the bag today is a driver, #3 & #5 hybrid clubs and 6-LW and a putter. I'm not really ashamed or embarrassed not carrying or hitting 2-5 irons or reaching par 5s with a driver and 3 wood. They don't take MUCH of my money, anyway!!! dave

In a recent trade, I got a Ping Eye 2 1-iron, and a Ping BeCu ISI 22-iron. They are monsters!

But, I think I will stick to 3-PW. I think the 1- and 2-irons would be a bit much for me to use. As much as I would like to think, I am barely a golfer.

ok john, here's a 1-iron joke for your new club ...

Two guys standing on #1 tee when Jack himself walks up and asks if he can join them. #1 is a dogleg right with most of the hole straigh out and the last 100 yards the straight right turn to the green.

First player says, "Mr. Nicklaus, do you have a club recommendation off the tee for me?"

Nicklaus responds, "The last time I was here, I pulled out the 1-iron and hit it out over those trees and put it right on the green. Made eagle. Here, why don't you try my 1-iron."

Player #1 tees it up and hits an almost magical shot rising up toward the trees guarding the corner. Ball hits the trees about 30' up and drops straight down completely in jail.

Player #2 tees up the 1-iron, flushes it only to find a similar fate.

Nicklaus walks onto the tee, pulls out a 4-iron and drills it straight out and safely to the corner.

Player #1 is puzzled. "Mr. Nicklaus, I thought you said last time you were here, you hit 1-iron out over the trees and right onto the green?"

Jack: "Sure. Last time I was here those trees were only about 6' tall!!!"

i love the one and two irons, i have never had what you would describe as a smooth tempo - more of a hitter and i find the control you get from old school 1 and 2 irons is much better than the hybrids.

Easier to drill the ball low with the iron whearas the hybrids pop up esp into the wind

i was playing with my friend, and he was carrying an old mcgregor 1 iron. We were fooling around and i was hitting it off the tee, for some reason i hit it beautifuly about 220 high draw!

I used to swap between a 5 wood and a 1-2 iron depending on course/ conditions. Now i have found a cleveland 1i with a red heavy/stiff shaft.
hits it as low as you would like and as straight as a die...I dont need any other clubs for a long time i hope. and you can chip/putt with it. if i could get it out of the bunker i would be all set!

Here's another 1 iron joke:
Player 1: "I hit my 1 iron consistently - about 230 with a really nice baby draw."
Player 2: "Neither do I."

That is great to read. I have reshafted a old set of 78 Wilson Staff tour blades, 1-sw. It took awhile to get the feel of the 1i and my distances will still vary with it, but enjoy hitting it. When I go for "range time" I take my 1i, 2i, 8i and a couple of wedges. What the old stuff has taught me is to make a smoooooth full swing and focus on striking the ball rather than distance. When I go back to my "A" set of clubs its like how did I ever mis hit these? lol, but I do. IMO, the myth that a 1i is impossible to hit is ridiculous and only fostered by people who can't hit a ball to begin with. Practing with a 1 & 2i will improve swing noticably.

I heard that joke 20 years ago. The 1-iron thread was a good time to pull it from out of the mothballs.

Accuse me of stealing from a commercial on Golf Channel? Please explain yourself. Or kindly shut up. dave

Whats everyone elses opinions on playing the 1 & 2 iron? I have always enjoyed hitting them :)

I've always liked long irons and have always had them in my bag until just a few weeks ago.

When I got my ZM's I found that I hit the ZM 3-iron about the same distance as my i3 Blade 2-iron so I dropped the 2-iron and added a fairway wood. My brother carries a similar 1-iron to the one that you just got. His is a BeCu black dot Eye-2 with a 44" S driver shaft in it. He hits it a ton and, like my 2-iron was, it's his go to club on the tighter driving holes. If you can hit long irons well they give you a lot of shot making options that may not be possible with high lofted fairway woods or hybrids (I've yet to try a hybrid so I could be way off on that), for many golfers however, that's a big IF.

Yeah... that's a slight deviation from the commercial they play on the golf channel a dozen times per day. The old man pulls a good one on his grandson.

    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.

    • Well the first advice I would give is to look at your swing. If you are swing out to in, it may be difficult to fix your misses with club adjustments. They would only be a bandaid. I use midsize grips because I have long fingers and I feel I have more control with them. I also have tinkered with shaft length and swing weight. But I know when I miss it’s because my swing was off.
