Hi there,

I'm new to golf, been to the golf range for the last couple of weeks and I'm slowly becoming for competent. I've got an old set of Spalding Pulsars that I got from a family member, and I'm looking at getting my own set.

What do you guys think is the best thing to do? Carry on with what I have or get my own set?

Thanks in advance,

Daniel

Got my Iron's at a pawn shop, Driver and woods from "play it again sports" store. Been playing only two and one half years... not nearly ready to make a large investment as these work well for me at this time. If there's nothing wrong with what you got right now, I'd say stay with them. Your post said you just started, good for you!

I ordered a Chicken and an Egg on the Internet, to find out which came first... I'll keep you posted!

Daniel, here are my thoughts on starting out. Remember, everybody is different, you might be able to smack a 3 iron out of the rough 210 yards, or maybe you can't get a 7 iron airborn off a tee, so take this (and other) advice with a grain of salt.

1) loft is your friend. I used to recommend beginners not get a driver and use a 5 wood off the tee, but with todays drivers being so huge and coming in lofts of 12 to 16 degrees, it's hard not go ahead and jump in with both feet.

2) Confidence, like loft, is your friend. Assuming you don't buy a set of blades (players' clubs), go with a set you like the looks of. I'm always amazed when I'm out and some one will pull out a some OLD wood barely bigger than my putter and knock it 25 yards past all of us. His next statement is usually, "This thing is old, but I just love this club."

If you struggle with your driver, take 2 or 3 inches off. Tiger used to hit his driver with like a 41 or 42 inch shaft. When I started out I took 3 inches off and started getting better results, then added it back on as I improved.

Hybrids generally treat you better than the long iron, and you can buy a lot of sets that start with the 4 iron or come with hybrids already. You can even use it off the tee instead of a driver. I've had my but kicked several times by old men that hit it 180 off the tee straight down the middle.

Check out TGW, Golfsmith and Edwin Watts, they have great deals on last year's sets. I got a set of Wilson Di7 4-SW for 299.99 on Ebay brand new. That has to be the most forgiving set I've hit in a long time, and I love the looks of them. Add a wood or hybrid and putter and that would have you set for almost any course.

The quality of today's sets is such that you can't go too far wrong with anything you buy as long as you get a name brand set. Unless you hit the ball well now, it won't do you a lot of good to test out a lot of clubs, just buy a good "game improvement" set that appeals to you, try not to spend too much, and have a great time... jmoc

Hey Jmoc!

What a wonderful reply! Thanks to both of you for taking the time out of your days to reply. As you said at the beginning of your reply Jmoc, I can hit a 7 iron off the floor over 100 yards, most times, some times it ends up low or I top it!

I like the idea of buying a set of clubs which I can grow into. I've seen some set of clubs that I like the look of but I'm not sure if they are any good, maybe you could shed some light onto them;

http://www.direct-golf.co.uk/golf_pa...packages/p7945

Those are the sets that I like the look of.

However, perhaps purchases items seperatly would be better? For example, I've found these Wilson Deep Red Irons;

Thanks,

Hey Daniel,

I'm guessing by your post with links to direct golf that you are in the UK? I've not checked out the links yet, as I am working at the moment, but check out Snainton golf also, as they usually have some really good deals on clubs.
Where abouts in the UK are you from?

Hi Surefire,

Thanks for your reply. Yeah I'm in the UK, based in Northampton. I'll check out that link now!

Thanks,

Daniel

I would recommend getting a newer set. Something in the 'game improvement' category. As these clubs offer great forgiveness and will allow your game to improve (if you persist). eBay is a great source, just try and make sure that you get the correct shaft for your swing. If your strong and swing fast, I'd recommend stiff flex, if in doubt just ask ur local store. Look for clubs like: Callaway x18/x20, ping g5, Taylor made RAC OS. Basically you are after forgiveness. Unless you are an extremely slow swinger, stay away from graphite irons.
Driver: Callaway Diablo Edge Tour 10.5* (UST Proforce v2 77g X Flex) 3 Wood: Callaway Diablo 15* (UST Proforce v2 86g S Flex). 2 Hybrid: Adams A4 Tech 17* (UST Proforce v2 105g S Flex). 3 and 4 Hybrid: Adams Idea Pro 20* and 23* (UST Proforce v2 105g S Flex)
Irons: Tour Edge Exotics...

Wow, you got some great choices there. The 2nd set with Driver, wood, hybrid, irons, putter and bag would not be bad at that price. Then in 2 years or so you could upgrade if the mood hit or stay with them as they will serve you well. At 100 pounds, the Deep red Irons are a steal, you could then get a Putter, bag and Wood/Hybrid or Driver of your choice, you'd end up spending more money, but if you shopped around, not much more. Depending on who you play with and or where you play, the Deep Red Irons would give you a bit more "street cred" on the tee. I like the 5 through LW as I find 4 wedges save more strokes (for me) than my long irons or woods do. I hate to recommend, but I think the Deep Red Irons are almost too good to pass up. You should be able to snag a bag for 30 or 40 bucks, and you get to choose the color. I'd get a hybrid of 22* to 25*, you can hit it off the tee, from the fairway and the rough. Add the putter of your choice and you probably won't spend much more than for the set. Either way, sounds like you know what you want and are pretty well aware of your game/ability. Good hunting... jmoc
