How good are these "supposed" to be? 2x, 5x, 10x better than any Titleist Driver ever made???

Being sarcastic? They're improved in terms of launch conditions and they offer, unlike the 907s, three separate launch conditions to better suit a wider range of players.

They're all improved on MOI over the 907D2, but obviously nowhere near even 2x.

Hehe...i wasn't but just trying to gauge how good they are supposed to be. I'm curious to try them out, but they won't be as easy to hit vs. TMs, right? As far as the driver, I've heard they are not really for the mid to high handicappers in general.

I know they came out with the 909s and included a club for the higher handicapper...

"In general," Titleist equipment tends to be for the 15-handicapper or better. But it's a really, really wide generalization.

I've found that some of the TM clubs - even TP versions - are tougher to hit. The longer, lighter shafts are a big part of that. For some, the square faces on the Titleists are a good thing, and for others, closed faces of some non-TP TM clubs are a good thing.

I hit the D3 last night into a net. felt solid and i like the look a lot better than the d2.

Not sure if i'm ready to drop $350 on a driver that will probably not get me a lot more distance than my current 907 D2.

Please do; particularly that D3. May think about it as a modernisation for my 983E.....but not at that price. Think it's a job for eBay in a year or so.

On a completely different subject, Erik, some great photos on your photoblog!

sorry about that....played with it on Friday.

I played with the D3 9.5* VooDoo Stiff.

First off, I really like the 45" length as compared to the newer drivers coming in at 45.75"-46.25". Felt like I was in control. The VooDoo felt very stable maybe a little boardy (not V2 boardy, but similar), and tip stiff. Ball Flight was definitely lower than normal with not as much run out as I thought it would have. I thought the shaft would be smoother than it was, and I feel my expectations were just too high for what I got. I balked at the 4.4* torque rating of the blueboard and in hindsight I should have gone that route, but went with the VooDoo because it was similar in shaft specs that I normally have good luck with (3.2* torque).

The setup is nice, but when you look down at the head it almost seems the alignment aid is closer to the heel then it should be. Honestly, that bothered me a bit. Not questioning Titleist engineers, but I still aligned the ball up a little towards the toe, and it did what I wanted it to do. Workability is great. For me, it was easier to draw then fade. I could put anything from a big hook to a baby draw but my fades were more of pushes, so I stopped trying to fade. 440cc head is especially nice to look at, as compared to the larger 8,000,000cc heads that are out there.

Distance: Here's the surprise. Not a big bomber. Avg SS with driver is 102-105, right at the border of firm/stiff. my average drive with roll 260-275, prolly about the 245ish carry. If I get lucky, I'll pump a 280-285 out there, but maybe once a round. Longest ever drive, in normal conditions, 321 yards. I usually hit in the middle of the clubface with variance of up and down, not left and right. The 909 wasn't much longer than my OLD r7 460 TP. Maybe, and I'll say maybe, 2-5 yards. Boring and Flat is how I like it, and that's how this driver went. I'm thinking if I went blueboard I would have carried longer and it would have been overall 10-15 yards longer. Could have been my normal human swing speeds and smoother transition were not enough Y chromosome to get this shaft to work for me.

It's a pretty driver, especially with that blood red shaft of the VooDoo, Chrome sole, and charcoal gray crown, and the overall aesthetics of this driver are nice. It's a nice consistent driver, but I should have listened to the Vector Launch Monitor when it told me I needed more launch angle.

If you are a consistent driver, then the D3 is for you. Definitely feel it's an upgrade over the 905 and 907 series. Another thing I liked was the sound is nice, not tin cannish. I'm thinking with my SS and smoother transitions the BB is prolly a better fit. I'd also like to try the D2 also, just haven't gotten around to it. Hope that helps some of you.

Thanks Klew. Decent review; sounds like a driver worth a look-see. Any plans to try out the blueboard version? By the way, love your listed handicap !

Played nine holes (hit a few drives off each to test) with the 909D2 today. Love the sound, really like the feel and forgiveness, but didn't get a single ball to fade due to some goofy thing in my swing, so more testing required.

    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
