Hello!
I am new to the forum and am looking for some advice. I have been having trouble finding good info from google, so if you know some good sites please share! I am going to go out for high school golf this season but feel like I need new irons.I am a high handicapper, my guess is I shoot a little over 100. My grips are not tacky at all, and some are lumpy (like they have a pencil suck under them allmost). They all feel different. I have a set of square 2 power cavity X. Is it worth regripping these? Or should I get a used set of game improvement Irons? I don't have much to spend, as I am a highschooler and although I have a job, I dont make all that much. Just FYI, I have big bertha knock off woods (1,3,5,7) I use the one as my driver most of the time, but I also have a knight driver. I have trouble playing the clubhead infront of my hands with that club though, so I usually hit my one wood. I hit the 3 or 5 off the tee for long par 3's (like 190 yards) I hit the 5 as a fairway wood, and dont use the 7. My wedges are P, 56, and 64.
Thanks for any advice! If anyone here would sell me a set of irons, I would be able to pay via paypal.

Thanks for reading and any advice!

is that with the hybrids and the irons? In my quick browsing it looked a lot higher than that, but I may be looking at the wrong subcatagory of ideas... That is used price correct?

I would also consider getting rid of that 64 degree wedge (even if you dont have something to replace it with). At your skill level its going to cause more problems than its worth. good luck

I hit a lot of good shots with this wedge, and rarely mishit with it. I use it when I dont want the ball to roll much close to the green and there is no chance of getting on the green otherwise. I don't get much spin, so if I use a sand or P wedge I roll of the back of the green a lot of the time on a couple specific holes on my home course. I know that it is a kinda risky club for me so I have played 5 rounds with it then 5 rounds without it, and had much better shots around the green with it. Same thing with my diver/1wood, I played 5 rounds with each and have to take a lot of penaltys when I use the driver, so the one wood works better for me.

I thought a driver and a 1 wood were the same thing.

the driver and a 1wood are the same thing. your set is probably a few technologies ago so the head on the "1wood" aka driver, is smaller than the new ram driver.

here are my two cents on your irons:
i suggest goin to a golf shop and demoing alot of cavity back irons, forget about blades at your current handicap and skill level they won't do much to help your enjoyment of the game. for a nice set of used or new irons look at adams, ping g5, tommy armour irons are very nice to learn on. bottom line, get something forgiving but shows you enough feedback so you can improve your game. make sure u get steel shafts on the irons as graphite will be too light for a kid in high school(i am also in high school and had a set of graphites). whatever clubs you get, make sure they work for you.

In my Diablo Edge Tour/ Titliest Stand Bag:
Driver: Nike VR Pro 8.5* w/ Myazaki 43g X
3 Wood: Nike VR Pro II 13.5* w/ Diamana Whiteboard 83g X
5 Wood: Cobra S9-1 Pro 18* w/ Diamana Whiteboard 83g X

Hybrid: Mizuno MP Fli-Hi 21* w/ Prolaunch Red X
Irons: 4-7 Titleist 712 CB, 8-9 712 MB w/ TT Dynamic Gold X100

Wedges: 46* Vokey SM4, 54* Vokey SM4, 60* TMade ATV

Putter: Scotty Cameron Newport 2 Belly 43"

This is a well intentioned statement. But if you hit the 64 well keep it. A lot of people say the same thing about the 60. But it's just not true. I'm sorry to say that. The problem with lob wedges and high handicappers isnt the club, but the type of shots they are trying to play with them. Lob wedges are great for the beginner who misses a lot of greens. They can use them for half, 3/4 and full shots. The lob wedge also works well as a low risk, high reward chipping club. I know Tiger uses one club around the green for most of his shots (a 60*). But we amateurs are not Tiger. We need options.

In your search for affordable clubs remember, If you hit it well then it's good for you. But don't forget to be really honest with yourself on how those clubs perform for you. And always consider how they perform on a whole, not just when you and they are at their best. Good Luck!

Even though you are looking for a more inexpensive set...it is work at least making sure that the length and shaft is fit for your swing.

I have always liked Cobra irons. They are less expesive, but have the advantages of good technology and forgiveness. I'm in a set now and they have been great.

    • I mean there has to be some thought. For eg., something like 'soft knees and wrists' at set up and maybe a dynamic 'left arm to chin' as a trigger to start DS. I have these one or two anchor thoughts and have served me well. In fact, my wildest swings are the one where I have no thoughts or if I forget to walk thru my anchor thoughts. In contrast my best rounds are where I am consistent with the anchor thoughts.    OTOH, if I am running my entire half hour lesson (hypothetical) with some pro that I had last Saturday or whatever before every swing then I'm probably in trouble before I even get over the ball.
    • Two bits. Bit 1 The NCAA's appeal of Brendan Sorsby being granted a temporary injunction will not be heard until February, so there will be nothing to prevent Sorsby from playing the full season and potential CFP.  Bit 2 The Big Ten Conference will hold a meeting and is expected to ban all of its athletic programs from playing Texas Tech in the regular season. Georgia has done the same. The SEC will meet to consider a similar ban. Fellow Big 12 members TCU and Kansas State are spearheading a similar ban, but the conference charter might not allow it. Meanwhile, Big 12 athletic directors are meeting this week to explore what options the conference might have.
    • No, but I'm also in disagreement that golfers have no thoughts over the golf ball, and/or don't ever think I've met someone I truly believe is thinking nothing but "target" or something on most shots.
    • StuM,  I have, in the past, added a left handed club. (Ususally a 7 iron) However, I usually take a stroke penalty and move the ball to where I want it.  I play for fun and in a pinch can use theback side if my club if I don't want the penalty stroke.    RetiredOldMan,  Terry
    • So, Brendan Sorsby, Texas Tech transfer QB, was found guilty of sports betting by the NCAA. He admitted to it. He placed thousands of bets over multiple years while at Indiana and Cincinnati. This included betting on his own teams.  The NCAA rules ban athletes from betting on any sport (college or pro).  A retired visiting judge from Tarrant County, Texas has put an injunction on the NCAA ruling. He is a visiting judge because the first judge was a graduate and big fan of Texas Tech, and he recused himself. The judged ruled the following... "Under Curry's order, Sorsby is permitted to play for Texas Tech's 2026 season on the condition that he continues his treatment for a gambling and anxiety disorder and serves a two-game suspension (missing games against Abilene Christian and Oregon State)."  Don't get me wrong, I don't particularly care for the NCAA. That still doesn't mean that a college can choose when or where to say, "Yea we agree to these rules for all our sports, well except in this case." Here is a breakdown from S&W. The Hidden Weapon in Sorsby’s Injunction: How a Lubbock County Court Order Quietly Neutralized the NCAA’s Most Powerful Enforcement Tool - Law Offices of Snell & Wilmer By Ryan J. Regula On June 8, 2026, Lubbock County District Court Judge Ken Curry issued a temporary injunction in Brendan Sorsby v. National Collegiate Athletic Association, Cause No. DC-2026-CV-0791 (99th Judicial District... The main judgement made sense. Sorsby, I am going to have all this harm done to me if I don't get to play. The Judge, I agree. The penalty for gambling is too harsh, so here are all these things you must do, and I will grant this injunction against the NCAA. Basically, an analogy would be when a person goes into court for a DUI and they agree to all these other things to not end up in jail.  What sucks for the NCAA is the NCAA has appealed to Texas’ Seventh Court of Appeals, based in Amarillo. All four justices that preside over the court are graduates of Texas Tech University School of Law. It would be hilarious if all four of them had to recuse themselves 🤣. For those who like to read legal rulings...
