My son is 14 years old 5'6" tall and weight about 120 pounds, he has been playing golf on and off for about 7 years and he played 18 holes 3 times scoring about 110, my questions is should he have graphite shafts that weight about 65 grams or steel shaft that are about 110 grams?

I heard of Nippon golf shaft weight under 100 grams, but not always available.
Thanks for your replies in advance.

I'm guessing your talking about irons, hopefully, as your other posts have been about getting him irons. Anyway, I would say just get him normal steel ones, steel IMHO feels much better, and instills more confidence when your hitting.

I think steel shafts are the best option, although graphite is not bad. Steel is a little more accurate and provides better feel, both good for the novice golfer.

Taylor Made now has a shaft called Black Steel that is also under 100 grams. To my knowledge it's the lightest steel shaft available now. Nippon and Dynamic Gold SL are also both light but not quite as light as the Black Steel. If you're looking at purchasing new irons, either check Taylor Made's website or ask a fitter or someone at the place you are looking to purchase from.

I am also 14 I have played both graphite and steel in the past year I love the feel of steel, but if your son doesnt really care that much about feel graphite definitely has a slight performance edge over steel.

Personally, I wish I could've used graphite when I was growing up and learning the game 25+ years ago. I feel that I have better control. But, I have a couple sets of irons with steel that I use. . .Learning however, control and a simple repeatable swing may be accomplished easier with the lighter graphite.

I would simply. . .well maybe not simply. . .but I would have him try sets with the same heads but with steel vs. graphite.

The steel will build his strength quicker, but he can always lift weights and build strength by other means.

Well I'm 14 and i am about the same heigth and weight as your son. I shoot in the 80s and i use steel shafts. I think I think you should get the steel shafts because if he starts taking the game for seriously chances are he won't want graphite. So he can grow in to the steel nippons maybe

do your son a favor, buy him steel irons. i learned on graphite shafts, and now i have steel shafts. i got my handicap down to an 8 with the graphites, with the steel my swing feels so much more consistant and i don't have to be so concerned and can just take big healthy cuts. i get more distance on my irons and more confidence in my swing. i'm 18 btw, but a slightly different build than your son (6'4" 295lb) haha. my vote is still with steel, he will have them for years to come, and any growing kid should have steel, you don't need graphite until you get too old to handle the weight of steel shafts.
