Hi everybody I need some opinions/input. I bought the Callaway X Forged irons 3-PW with the Project X 5.5 shafts about three weeks ago. I have had other people hit them and everyone says the same thing, "they hit short". Here are my old iron distances with each club:

5:195-205
6:185-195
7:175-185 these are on average
8:165-175
9:155-165
10:140-150
PW:full swing-135

And here are my new distances:

3:210
4:200
5:around 190-195 these are also average
6:175
7:160-165
8:155
9:140-150
PW:maybe 125 if i swing hard

my question is why would I lose this much distance even when I have good contact. My swing is the same and so is my clubhead speed, so has anyone else had this problem.

Thanks

I would check to see if the lofts are the same. Your old iron lofts may be stronger/lower than the new irons.

Posted
also if your old irons were made for distance, or had a head the produced a higher ball speed, then you will lose distance. i know for sure that when i go from using my r7's that i will not nearly hit my 7 165 because im going to a players iron(not sure which 1).

The only irons I can find that have a 10 iron and a PW are Nickent 3DX, and the lofts on Nickents are considerably stronger than your X forged. That's why they need a 10 iron!

it depends on your old irons. Game improvement irons are generally longer due to the fact they have less loft per iron. Also, the x-forged are players' irons, meaning smaller sweet spots. If you're minutely off the sweet spot, you'll be losing distance too. Think of it as the difference between blades and cavity backs...the bigger the club, the bigger the sweet spot. The longer the club, the harder it is to find the sweet spot too.

I doubt Callaway has a defect with their irons...

Possibly too light shafts could make you balloon. IDK about the losing distance, as they give me a ton more distance than my r7s.

Thanks for the replies. And I am thinking of having the lofts strengthened to match my old irons which were yes the nickent 3dx. does anybody have any thoughts on this idea whether it would hurt the clubs or anything

i'm pretty sure that will close the face but Idk, if so it will be minute but it could affect your shots if your normal shot is a draw.

Strengthening the lofts will decrease the bounce, so the leading edge will tend to dig more (I think).

It shouldn't do anything to the clubs unless you are adjusting them more than two degrees.

Why bother? Why not just have them restamped? Have the 5 iron stamped 6, the 6 iron, stamped 7, the 7 iron stamped 8 and so on... That's effectively what you want to do by delofting them, except this way, you won't affect the bounce.

Get used the new yardages and go from there. Why should it matter if your holding something called a "6 iron" instead of a "7 iron"?

I agree with rebby, just tell everyone that you are using "traditionally lofted" irons.

Sure that sounds like a good idea, but I'm 18 still trying to hit the ball as far as possible haha. I'm so used to pulling out certain clubs from certain distances and thinking that it takes a 7 to get on from 165 sucks when it used to go 180. I should be hitting longer not shorter. I know it's all in my head and numbers shouldn't matter just the score, but I guess now it's just getting used to these shorter distances. Thanks for everybody's input and i think i'll just start building a faster club head speed to get the distance haha.

i dont mean to offend you at all but my with a 13 handicap you will be better off using cavitybacks as you probably dont hit the sweetspot on the x forged all the time and they have way less forgivness the the nickents so my it is just ball striking i am sorry if i offended you

Thats not always the case, I know a guy that drives it straight and hits his irons great, but cant chip/putt worth a crap. Hence he is a 15 handicap.

To me, I would just adjust what club you pull out for certain distances. After a few rounds, you will start remembering to pull a 6-iron for a 175 yard shot. Unless it all comes down to the "i-hit-my-7-iron-185-yards-and-ill-be-damned-if-I-have-to-pull-a-6-iron-now" complex. Which, no offense, a lot of guys get. If you like the way the new irons feel, and you can hit them great, just adjust and save that money for something else, like lessons. just my .02

I think the reason you and your friends think they are "hitting short" is because you are looking at the number on the club and not the loft. that 10 iron from your last set is probably the same loft of your current 9 iron.

The clubs aren't hitting short, your just looking at the iron number and not the loft of the club.
