Hi, I have only been golfing one year and still trying new clubs and finding my game.

I started golf with a $200 starter set which included a 460cc 10 degree ultra light driver (not sure if its reg flex or less) , but it hit pretty well I have a bad slice atm.

I then was given a Cleveland launcher 460cc 8.5 degree stiff flex by a friend that changed drivers. Now I struggle with driving regardless of the driver I just slice the ball a lot. I know the reason for the most part so I dont need to get into that.

My question is Having a lower swing speed. 82mph is my average drive speed on the p3proswing golf simulator. What exactly does the shaft flex to for me. I understand the loft is loft. BUt I dont have a problem with getting it in the air be it a 8.5 or 10.5 loft. Then generally fly just as high if I connect good. I do tee down more on the 8.5. So why do they say that as a beginner I need to be playing with a high degree driver, some even say up to 16 degree. Does the shaft flex and/or Loft of the driver cause a slice if your not swinging a stiff shaft at its desired swing speed?
Im looking to redo some of my bag for next season so Id like some insight on what a 20 handicapper with a slice should be playing with.

Hi, I have only been golfing one year and still trying new clubs and finding my game.

Stiff shafts are recommended for people with higher swing speeds (>100mph). Higher lofts are also recommended for those with lower swing speeds.

Lower lofts impart higher sidespin which is less forgiving for a slice. However, a slice can be from an open face (and no technology eliminates that) or an out to in swing path. I would recommend getting fitted for a driver. The other option is using the 3 wood for now - until you improve. Read "Search for the Perfect Driver", "The Right Sticks" or "Mad Science of Golf".

    • Day 33 (20 Feb 26) - played the Friday men’s group shootout.  Solid day of working from some tough shot results - made for a good number of up and downs for par (8 of the 9 pars were such). Cart mate and I discussed the visual aspect of the game - and how much it plays into the individual’s mindset during the round.  Love when the discussion is focused on learning and taking positives away and not just how bad the miss may be.
    • Day 507 - 2026-02-20 Got some backswing work in on GEARS Hybrid.
    • Still kinda working on the backswing stuff. I can turn < 45°, but I tend to tilt toward the target a little. I can tilt away from the target, but I tend to turn a bit more. Case in point. I can do it, though: This I can do all day (it's more lateral than I want, but it's very linear): Here's what 38° of turn looks like. Almost freaking nothing.
    • Good progress. I am finally feeling like I am settling my weight into my right foot earlier in the backswing. Right hip sinks back, right leg feels staying flexed. Feeling very stable and firm in the right leg. I feel like I could do a good squat with that right leg. Very balanced.
    • oops, forgot Pebble Beach and Spyglass.  And two more of the original Open rota, Prestwick and Musselburgh (with hickory shafted rentals).  And Muirfield.  And maybe a few more, I'll check my list when I get home.
