Hello all. I am looking at getting some new wedges in 09. Thinking im going to get the new Vokeys but cant decide on the lofts. So any input on the lofts would be greatly appreciated. Any ideas on bounce would be appreciated to. My pitching wedge is 48 or 47 degrees. Thanks

I guess a big question that comes out of this is 'what do you use out of bunkers?' I personally have gone the way of a strong Sand Wedge, by going 54* with 12* bounce. I play a 58* as my 'lob wedge' with 8* bounce (but then I have a GW which is 50*). Logically, if your PW is 47 or 48*, it would make sense to go 53 and 58 or something like that, but 53* seems strong for a SW (as does 52*) and I personally never liked a weak SW like 58* or 60*.

Currently I use a 58* out of the bunker.

My PW is 47° and I have 54 and 58 wedges. I think that if you are comfortable with the 52 and 58 that you have now you should keep that setup.

Greetings!

I posted in your other thread (without the poll). I like the idea of 54/10 and 58/8 or 58/10. If you use and like your 52 on approach shots into greens, then buy another 52. If you open a 58, it's almost the same as a 60. Check my other post.

Right now I have the pw at 47º, the gap at 52º, sand at 56º, lob at 59º.

I'm considering going 46º,50º,54º,58º. If I had to add another club somewhere else (hybrid or wood) and had to go with fewer wedges I'd probably go 47º, 53º, 59or60º.

I'm going to go against some people and suggest a 52* and a 56*. I have a nice 58*, but I'll find myself using it half as much as I find myself using my 54*. In my opinion you don't need high amounts of loft.

51 and 55. (I also carry a 58 and 60 and will keep ONE of those in the bag).

The only problem w/ the 52 on approach shot the yardages. I hit my PW 100 maybe a bit more my 52 90-95 and my 58 about 80. The only problem w/ this is when im laying good there is only 8(give or take a few yds) between my 52 and PW but 15-20(once again give or take a few yds) between my 52 and 58. Thats why im leaning towards the 54 60. I also like the highly lofted 60 because i play VERY fast greens. Also thanks everyone.

Hiya,

I'm fairly new to the scene, but have listened to a podcast from "the wedge guy" who says that the bounce depends on the type of ground you are playing on. That is, if it is firm you need higher bounce for soft ground and a higher bounce for firm ground. As any course is likely to have both, it sounds like there's some doubling up involved.

Hope that helps a bit

Again it depends on the type of ground conditions of the course or courses you play and the type of sand they use in the bunkers, personally I have a 4 wedges a 48* P-wedge a 52* G-wedge a 56* S-wedge and a 60* L-wedge in Michigan we have a lot of different surface types and bunker sand so I go with a mid to high bounce right now I'm playing with a 56* 10 and a 60* 8, going with the 4* difference in loft from club to club seems to be the best set up for me as far as yardage gaps go.

I would probably say that i play on mid-soft ground and the sand varies because i have two home courses. With this info around what bounce would i be? Thanks

Well I think 10* on a S-wedge and 8* on L-wedge is pretty good for semi-soft ground the more bounce you have the less the club will dig, you could also ask one of the pros at your course to see what they play and why, also your angle of attack will also depend on your bounce if your steep you will want a little more bounce, and if your shallow you can get away with a little less

Well i went and ordered a 52* and 58* 09 SM vokeys w/ project x 5.5s. I decided on this because i might bend them 1*weak and make them 53, 59. Anyways thanks for all the opinions.

I go 56, 60. Instead of using a 52, I choke down and hit a half shot with my PW, easy to repeat and goes the right distance gap. I think 52, 58 is a great idea and I might go in that direction for my next set of wedges.

I'm going to go against some people and suggest a 52* and a 56*. I have a nice 58*, but I'll find myself using it half as much as I find myself using my 54*. In my opinion you don't need high amounts of loft.

Me too. I like 4* between wedges. I can do anything with a 56* that I can do with a 58* and a 60* is far too specialized to take up a full-time spot in my bag.

    • Day 3 (3 May 25) - played 18 (went solo) this afternoon at one of sister courses to my regular course.  Went with the three tee box format (Golld-White-Red as this adds a mix to the “I always play this club as my approach on this hole” routine).  The front presented issues as  the greens are suffering from the heat and lack of rain.  Add in 15-20 mph gusty winds and it’s not a walk in the park. It really made the approach reads a little hard to figure out - of the 3 pars on the front, two were GIR, the other a nGIR.  The rest were coming up short and that meant a lot of two putt bogies and a big old dbl- managed a 43.  The back greens are not suffering as bad and were more receptive to rolls of the rock. Finished that side with a two over 37 (par 35) that included 6 GIR that resulted in 5 para and 1 birdie, the other 3 were two putt bogies.  Was a good test of course management and not being afraid to club up or down.
    • Day 287: range session today. Worked on my drill with the wrist turn, also trying to get my hips moving more. Looking a little better. Then went and worked on putts inside 10 feet for about 20 minutes.
    • Day 12: Kentucky Derby Day Hit the range for about 30 minutes before it started to rain pretty hard. Good session!
    • Day 215 - 2025-05-03 Hit some balls at Downback. 🙂 @NatalieB is a college graduate now.
    • Purchased a new set of Ping G410 irons with True Temper XP 95 (R300) steel shafts (4-PW) at a good price. Had moved to graphite shafts many years ago (spanning various irons sets from Titleist, TaylorMade and Mizuno) thinking they would be appreciably lighter to help my slower swing speed. My weekend golf partners told me to quickly re-shaft the Pings to graphite. I must admit: (1) these clubs feel as light as any graphite shafts (2) I am hitting these irons the purest I have ever experienced in an iron (3) they fly straight!  Just looking for reinforcement to stick with the steel shafts.
