Well we finalized our plans for 4 rounds in Biloxi March 28-31st.

Here's s courses:

Windance Country Club - Mark McCumber design (former Ben Hogan and Nike tour stop)
The Oaks - former Nike/Buy Tour stop and '03 Q-school stop
The Bridges - Arnold Palmer design
Grand Bear - Jack Nicklaus design.

Anybody played any of these before?
I've spent most of my life golfing - the rest I've just wasted.

In my bag todayâ¦.

Also, we're driving down to Biloxi and and Memphis is about 1/2 way. Anybody know of a "can't miss" course in the Memphis area we could hit on the way down/back?

I'm originally from near Biloxi, but didn't pick up golf until after I moved away for college 6 years ago. When I go home to visit my parents at the holidays I usually just play the lower end course in my hometown. This past Christmas I did play Timberton Golf Club in Hattiesburg, MS, which is about an hour north of Biloxi (you'll probably drive through Hattiesburg on Hwy 49). It's a really nice course, some of the trademarks of that part of Mississippi, namely huge pine trees lining some of the holes. Not much development along the course, interesting architecture and the greens were rolling pretty smoothly when I was there 4 weeks ago. I'd recommend it if you get a chance, although I don't know how it compares to some of the casino courses on the coast (Bridges, Golden Bear, etc, although those are on my list for the next trip home). Hope you enjoy yourself!

What I play:

Driver: XLS Hibore 9.5* Fit-On Red (S)
Woods: Tour XPC 16* Graffaloy ProLite (S)
Hybrid: Exotics 3HIrons: Reid Lockhart 3-SWWedge: rac 60*Putter: a crappy $20 Academy putter (but it works!)

There is a place outside Memphis called Spring Creek Ranch. I think it might be kinda tough to get on but if you can all I have heard is do it. Supposedly it is a Jack Nicklaus design that he did for an Opthamologist in Memphis as a favor the doctor is supposedly loaded out and that he pull all stops for this golf course. It will be interesting to hear if ya'll get on.

I live on the MS. Gulf Coast and consider The Bridges my "home" couse. I play it at least once a week. It is a great course, very challenging and very pretty scenery.
Some tips for you:
Bring extra balls - the course was built in wetlands area with bayous and tidal basins throughout, hence the need for the many bridges. Any errant shot, forget about it unless you have hip-waders on.
Say "Hello" to the resident alligators on the 17th and 18th holes. By late March they should be back out sunning themselves at the edge of the fairways.
Bring insect repellant - early spring is prime time for the gnats, mosquitos, and biting flies here in South Mississippi.
Bring extra cash - the Hollywood casino is right next door
Take the time during your round of golf to look around and remember that three years ago all that was around you was under water and destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. It will make you appreciate the hard work put in by the people around here and the present day beauty of the course all the more.
I apologize about not being able to tell you more about the other courses, but I am playing the Oaks for the first time this afternoon, maybe I'll be able to tell you more about it later.

    • I'm confused - the team of two is playing a scramble but the single player is playing best of two balls or is he playing a one man scramble with two shots? If the single is best of two balls, then I'd bet on the pair playing a scramble everytime. If it's a two man scramble versus a single person scramble, I'd take the single, at least until fatigue was a factor. Give a regular play two shots and I think he is going to play better than the other two guys. That said, probably works better for the solo for 9 holes than 18. If the solo was smart and self aware of his game, and many of us are not as aware as we should be, he would conserve his energy and not play a second swing after a good shot.
