How do you lower your ball flight?

Some people on here have said you shouldn't just get stiffer/heavier shaft - so how is it done - change your technique? Different swing plane/get less steep on the ball?

So is it lessons or get fitted? or both?

A different shaft seems like a temporary fix. Changing your swing seems more permanent.

The only thing that I can think of is where you finish your swing. Think of hitting a punch shot vs. hitting a high shot. Your arms finish higher on a high shot that on a punch shot. You could try finishing your swing with lower arms. I watched Tee it Up with Tiger and he explained it much better than I did. Search Youtube for it.

This is funny because I swing down on the ball more than anyone I know and I have a low ball flight. I mean, I have a good swing speed so that isn't the problem. Also, although I should have stiff shafts, I have regular shafts, so those should be getting the ball up higher too.

You probably just have a low spin rate, the lower it is, the more the ball will roll forward obviously, and when it's in the air it will go lower. Like if you put backspin the ball will go up, top spin will go down so as you apply less back spin it goes lower, and more back spin makes it go higher.

I have a ridculously high ball flight with a fade mostly and the only thing I can do to control this is with technique. Drawing more often and playing punch shots.

Yeah I have a pretty high spin rate - even punch shots where the club finishes low end up soaring. Fine when you're hitting a 4 iron 150, but when you're trying to hit a 3 wood 200, or a driver into the wind - harder to control.

Hit a 6 iron from a bunker yesterday - went 150 forward, 80 yards up, 50 yards right and 30 yards backwards. BALOON!

OK, so I guess my next question is how do I increase my spin rate? I play Pro V1s so I don't think it's the ball. Like I said before, I hit down on the ball and usually strike the ball very well. This is something I know little about so any answer will help.

You need to pinch the ball between the club and the turf, make it so the bottom of your swing is lets say 1 inch after the ball, you need to hit down into it more. You could also try swinging steeper for a higher trajectory.Clean clubs help too.

Original Poster, also I don't think equipment matters that much at all, I play a regular shaft, yet my ball speed was 154-158 today on the simulator which I know is highly accurate, yet I still get a nice low boring flight. I think it's just too steep of a swing, try taking the club back to straight down the target line and taking it up while doing that, you might be rising too early.

take more club ball back in my stance and the length of the backswing will determine the distance. I hit a PW 100 yards uphill back pin with a 3/4 swing and the ball bounce twice checked and spun back toward the hole.

I'm assuming you want a lower piercing shot all the time rather than hitting a low shot now and again,if you you work on having a straight left wrist at impact this will give you a piercing shot all the time.

If you have a high spin rate, the ball will naturally travel higher no matter what you do. So to bring your ball flight down, lower your spin rate. You can do that by shallowing out your swing, and slowing down your swing.

    • Day 23: weird day, and only had a little bit of time. Just did mirror work again, working on where the elbow is in the downswing
    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
    • Day 127 12-17 Backswing and flow practice. Took advantage of the 60 degeee weather(it was 20 degrees Sunday)
