Who has played one, owns one, any of the above. Your thoughts?

I saw one at Carl's Golfland and was just intrigued that the club existed. Kind of like seeing Bigfoot in a golf store. I'd read about it, but never seen it up close. I decided not to hit it since my golf brain was already fatigued for the day.

I think they are kinda neat although I've never hit one. Most people chip with a club they already have. My best "chipper" was a Nike CPR 26* hybrid that I've thought about putting back in the bag just for that purpose. It was money from the fringe.

But if you have room in the bag, I say why not. The people I've seen use a chipper are usually pretty deft with one. I actually saw a chipper I would love to have tried. It was in a Ladies Callaway Gems set I was showing my GF at Dick's. That thing was heavy as hell, somewhere in the Es on a swingweight I'm guessing.

I bought one... It is AWESOME... I am 38... have a pretty high handicap and have just been seriously back into the game for the past year after a 10 year plus hiatus. I took it to the range with a bunch of other new clubs and a bunch of buddies (one is a scratch golfer) and they all poked fun... said they had wedges already etc... etc... then I hit about 20 shots about 120 yards towards a pin and hit the pin 2 times (the pin) I was accurate and it was easy to hit... by the end of the afternoon all had hit the club Many Many times... And several have already said they want one... Mine is the 42 degree club... It comes in a 37 and I have not hit that one... I only purchased it after reading a lot of good reviews. I am OK with my wedges but not perfect... I would guess that a 52 could do almost everything the niblick can in skilled hands... the difference is this is so darned easy. I can see some situations where getting out of rough under trees etc will be much easier with this than my wedges. I suggest you try one...

they are goofy looking, and they perfom amazing. but i dont feel like mixing up my iron set to substitute that for an 8 or 9 iron. anyway, i am great with my 8 and 9 irons. Definietly worth looking at, but it is not going in my bag.

So . . . keeping in mind I am slow, not retarded . . . a Niblick is like a Super PW on steroids?

No... its a club with an 8 or 9 iron loft that is typcally used for chipping... but can be used for full shots. It has been reinvented from the old days... basically the same idea as the odyssey chipper.

13 Wedges
1 Putter

The difference between this and the chipper as I see it is this club has a back on it... Kind of like the odyssey chipper if they made a hybrid version (huge sole and lots of back) so you can really take full swings with it in the rough without it getting hung up. Also... like a putter or their chipper these things have very short shafts which changes what happens when the grass grabs at the club head... since you are more vertical the head does not really get pulled to the side and you cut through the grass without having to compensate for it a lot more easily. It is kind of strange hitting a full swing at a ball 7 inches in front of your toes but it works.

I would love to try this club but I don't have room for it in my bag. I consider chipping a huge part of my game but my sand wedge just seems to do so much more, full swings, pitches, flops, etc. as much as I think that club would help me, it just can't do as much.

You are likely correct... I am carrying more than 14 for the next few (non-reported) games to give this a try so I can choose which one I like better (I have to get rid of 2 clubs) here is the thing... Trying it costs about $20 bucks... (I purchased this on ebay barely used for $80) and I have seen them new on sale for $100 somewhere on line... I figure for 20 I wanted to try it... So I will...

I would like to have one but am waiting on USGA to change maximum number of clubs to 16 first. I like the club and have played with it a little bit at golf stores, but feel it's not as versatile as other clubs. Full swing will be about the same as a GW/PW club (because of shorter shaft) and I can use 7/8/9 iron with about same loft for chipping. I already have enough trouble deciding what 14 clubs to carry. I do think if a person is not a good chipper this might be a good club as it does make it somewhat easier.

Its definitely a fun club. It has its uses on some courses. Since it was an xmas gift from the wife it kind of has to stay in the bag. I ended up dropping my 3 hybrid to fit it in which I was able to do with better ball striking with my irons.

Thanks guys... never even thought of it until now, but this would probably make an awesome club for my wife. She stuggles (big time) with chipping and right now I think she has room for a club or maybe two...

Like it isn't hard enough for me to figure out which 14 clubs to carry . . . when is the USGA going to change the number of clubs rule?

Thanks, Steve

They'll probaby change the rule to allow more clubs about the same time they allow 'gimmies' at the US Open.

Hi,

New member here, so I can't start a new thread yet!

Anyway I have a question re Cleveland Hi Bore XLS Driver.

I have just purchased a draw bias gold shaft version of this club, 10.5 deg loft. very nice club-sound a little loud. I have the new launcher 3 wood and prefer this for feel and sound. But the results of the Hi Bore are long and striaght (the draw bias straightens my cut to give a long straight high drive).

The question is regarding optimum tee height for this club. I have been given conflicting advice as to the best tee high for a standard long drive. My friend has the same club and says you must tee it lower than a normal 460 cc driver, whilst I have been teeing it high (half ball at least above top line)-I thought all 460 cc drivers were designed to be teed up like this unless you are atempting to cut or keep low into the wind.

Any thoughts? What is best? Anyone have experience with this club? Im a 14 hcp and cut across a little so prefer to not tee low if I can!

Oh and to answer the post-i think the niblick and all Cleveland kit is cool. I have 2 XLS hybrids-they are just so easy to hit. If the niblick is at all similar in ease of use it may be wworth a look at. I just can't face the giggles and funny looks when I pull it out-so probably not for me, Im not thick skinned enough.

The clubhead looks as though it's made for full swings as well as chipping, but the club is shorter and much more upright than either 8 or 9 irons--in that regard, it's like a chipper.

It might work for some, but couldn't possibly work for me. It would feel awkward to me.
