I have the Cally x-forged, which I do like but ever since I hit them last year the Ping S58(9) just ring in my head... I believe the S's are more forgiving than the X's..

But should I just grin an bear it or should I go for the S's? I want the performance, but I think I need the S forgiveness... I'm a tortured soul..what ya think?

PING makes awful irons in my opinion for something more forgiving try the x20 tours or x22 tours

I can relate. Certain irons just look good on certain days. For me sometimes I just want something new. I look at some nice new irons, then my mind is occupied for some time, thinking that I need them. In that type of situation it is important to me not to get impulsive with a purchase because I don't feel done with my current irons. I started with Ping i5s before I found my forged irons used. I now see myself buying forged in the future. I like the feel. The Ping player irons have been described as harsh at times. They have a distinctive feel that varies in popularity from player to player. When my mind is occupied I go back to the scene of the crime so that I can re-demo the irons. I see that on a different day, often my attention shifts to another favorite. The novelty wears off to reveal that they are just irons, not "the" irons.

A compromise between the X-Forged and s58 is a forged cavity back for feel and forgiveness. The mp-57 is quite popular. If you decide you want new irons, maybe give yourself the full treatment and shop around before you commit.
