My uncle, who is a very affluent golfer and the reason I took up golf one year ago, is coming to town next weekend. He has been playing since I can remember. And now, nearly one year later, he is returning, and I am sure he will be taking me out to the links. My uncle works in the film industry, and he is likes to indulge in rich and expensive luxuries. I am determined to beat him at his own game, despite my meek experience of just 1 year and unshakable determinism going against years of intimidating golf experience. So here is my question. What is THE ULTIMATE golf wager I should put on the table? My friend suggested that he should buy me a car should I on the off chance beat him. What do you guys think?

Clean all his clubs. Something simple. The odds are against me, so if he wins I shouldn't have to pay too heavily. But if I win, I deserve something grand.

Just curious, what clubs does he have, I suggest you and him playing cash per hole, you $5 him $50.

Play for a nice meal.

It sounds like there is a large income disparity between you and him. Let the loser pick. If you win, and he likes lavish things, he can take you out for a nice lavish dinner. If you lose - you can take him out to a local establishment that you enjoy.

If you are close he will enjoy it regardless of what happens

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

It really depends on how affluent he really is. If he's mega wealthy to the point that buying you a car wouldn't be a huge deal for him then yeah maybe cleaning his clubs or something trivial might fly. If the income disparity between you two is great enough that no amount of money or material thing you can put up will be of any worth to him then just look for something nice you can do for him that would be a bit of a punishment for you for being so brash as to think you could beat him at golf. Something you can both get a laugh out of like cleaning all the windows at his house or something.

Play for the meal.

If you loose then it's hot dogs in the grill.....if you win....then you can hope for something spectacular....a celabration, if you will.

I'll bet vacationing with him would be a blast.....see if you can raise the stakes for the next years match for something of that level.

Yeah it does. That's why there are odds when people gamble. You can either take the spread (your handicap) or get odds.

The meal idea seems pretty cool. Or the $50/$5 per hole idea.

the best golf wagers are not really for money. Make it something like he has to dress up in a skirt and go out to dinner or something really embarrassing. It makes it more worth while.

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

That's not one-on-one betting (and gambling and betting are different). Real men don't take odds when betting at golf when they're playing.

In my opinion, real men, don't tell other men what they should do to be real men! Oh wait a minute... d'oh!

You have to find a way to equal the playing field. I hate giving people shots because most people's handicaps are inaccurate. In lieu of giving people shots, I'll do wacky things like play the hole backwards. If you normally hit 3 wood - PW into a hole, tee off with the PW and play the hole out from there. I've also made a bet where I would tee off with a putter. This only works with certain putters, and after 4 or 5 hits the head is likely to fly off, so don't say I didn't warn you! I've also made a bet where I had to tee off left handed and play the rest of the hole righty. That was fun with all righty clubs. And of course there is my personal favorite:

Lets say a 5 handicap is playing with a 15. Normally the 5 handicap would simply give the other guy 10 shots on the first 10 handicap holes. Boring. Instead, each guy gets mulligans according to his handicap. BUT - here's the rub - The 5 handicap gets 5 mulligans. He can use them (one per hole) to re-hit any shot, OR he can force his opponent to re-hit any of his shots too!

For example, if your opponent hits a great shot, you can make him re-hit it, throwing out the first shot. The other stipulation with this is, if you force your opponent to re-hit a shot, he cannot use one of his mulligans after that re-hit either. However, you cannot force your opponent to re-hit a mulligan, only on the first shot. This brings some "mulligan management" strategy into play and can be really fun.

Just find a fun bet and make the better player do something different rather than give you strokes.

      It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…

      I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
