Hi Guys,

I am in the market for new irons and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Currently I am playing Titleist DCI 762's straight off the shelf. This time I'd like to be fit for a set. I like the look of the new AP 1's, but am open to suggestions of other brands/models I should try out. I don't like the idea of "game improvement irons". I would rather have a set that is forgiving, but still forces me to work on my ball striking.

Any Suggestions?

have you thought of the mizuno mp 52's?
They are more of a players club than the ap1's and stress ballstriking more, but they are also very forgiving for a players iron. They look pretty nice, and you cant beat mizuno when it comes to irons.

We sound like we're after simular sticks.

pshizz nailed it on the Mizzy MP 52s.....sweeeet sticks. I'm liking them as well as the Bridgestone J36 Pocket Cavity irons.

You can see some great pics of each on Golfwrx.com and TGW.com (look at the product tour for each for playing position photos) as well as their own web pages. The Bridgestone J36 PC do look much, much, much better in person....I assure you. I really like their West Coast Liquid Copper wedges, too.

Two weeks ago I was leaning towards Mizzy.....this week the Bridgestones.....either way seems to offer the desired performance.

One other stick that is also a possiblity is the new PING irons. They are sweet looking at adress. Looked at some in a local shop recently. I know they aren't forged like the other two sets.....but I'm quite sure that the feel is very nice. They definitely had a "players" profile.

Which new Ping irons? The i10s or the G10s?

Sorry....the S57 and new S58 series. They appear more bladelike at address.

Actually I think the i10s are a better idea because they are more forgiving but still make you work. And I agree with the mizuno idea.

If you like the ap1's how about the ap2's there more of a players iron even some of the tour players use them.

definetly try the mizuno MP line.... probably the 52's
Also give the nike victory red split cavities a go... They have that nice forged feel, and are on borderlin better player/ Game improvment. Similar to the 52's

I just built a new combo set, consisting of the Mizuno MX 200, 4-6 iron, and Mp-52s, 7-PW. Sweetest irons I have ever hit, and you can really work the ball with them. I highly recommend them. I spent $575 total for the set, custom fit for me. Well worth the money..
Next time they give you all that civic bullshit about voting, keep in mind that Hitler was elected in a full, free democratic election- George Carlin

Lot's of good choices named in this thread. We are fortunate to have so many heads, shafts and grips...as well as most of these manfs. will build to suit you!!!!

yeah the Nike VR Split Cavities are a great club you might want to think about... but theres really nothing wrong with your Titleist DCI 762's either. but i know how it is when you want new irons

You can look at the AP1's, but I'd go with the 2's if you get the AP line.

I had the 1's for about 2 months last year and traded them in on MP57's which I love. The AP1's were too game improvement and were distracting to look at address. Just my opinion.

Lot's of choices out there. MP52, MP57, AP2's, Nike Split Cavity

In my SX76 StaDry
Woods: G15 9.0° BB Stiff, G10 14°
Hybrids: i15 20°, Rapture 24°
Irons: AP2 5-PW

Yeah, the 762s are good clubs, but they are not custom fit. A golf buddy of mine just got fit for a set of Cleveland CG Golds and I was really impressed with how much better he was hitting the ball than with his off the shelf Taylor Mades. I have it in my head that custom clubs will help me shave strokes.

Providing he is a 18HC are you still saying AP2's? I mean I have hurd that they can be somewhat hard to hit if you are not a above average ball striker. Otherwise I would look into them myself

I wasn't really looking to change my irons i was very happy with my Taylor made R7. I saw a set of lightly used AP1s for sale and had someone that wanted my R7s. The thing that has impressed me the most is the high launch shafts, I can hit 4 and 5irons into greens and they land softly.

Go and demo a set.

I would say go for the Nike CCi Forged Irons... I just bought them and thus far they a no harder to hit than a non-forged set, yet gives you the ability to work the ball very well. At least look into them, they may be what your looking for

    • There are so many videos comparing and contrasting everything that I am both overwhelmed and more than a bit skeptical. Your comments above are much more valuable than hours of you-tube videos. Generally speaking, I’d much prefer to read something that someone took the time and trouble to write (such as your comments) than a bunch of videos, or worse, meaningless reviews that seem like they are all cut and paste selections of the same script. I’m more of a RTFM type than a watcher of “instructional” videos. By way of explanation, I don’t watch TV either.  So thanks - I’ll take that under advisement. I have an H3 that I bought for $10 that I’ve been carrying around but not sure why. Seems like a cool club, but I just don’t really know what to do with it.
    • I was using the window as a mirror. Just trying to be a more aware of the feels for a better backswing. Trying to not be as closed from A1 to A2. Then not letting the club head flip inside. What I was feeling was a pressure my right wrist, and like the palm of my right hand was pushing upward against the grip of the club. My right hand was the underside of the swing path.  Going to play around with this a bit more. It looked pretty decent with mirror/window work. Just wanted to jot it down.
