(I wasn't sure if this belonged in Golf Talk or Tour Talk, since it relates to a golf advertisement featuring someone who is known primarily for reasons other than golf)

I saw an ad yesterday (Friday) afternoon while watching the Northern Trust Open. It was advertising Tiger's return and the Accenture Match Play tournament, and featured Samuel L. Jackson doing parts of his famous speech from Pulp Fiction , only this time, we'd know his name was Eldrick Tiger Woods.

Has anyone found a copy of the ad online? I can't find it on YouTube. You'd think such an awesome ad would end up online pretty quickly.

I seen it on the golf channel .com I liked it, seemed to kind of fit with all the larger than life hype Tiger is getting in his leave and now his return to the tour.

IIRC there's actually a longer version where he's dropping expletives. Not commercial but from a Golf Channel show.

Saw the ad.

I thouroughly have enjoyed both Samuel Jackson's body of work and his passion for his endeavors.

I most assuredly did not like this add, though.

I understand that it's a play off of his line in Pulp Fiction...but I think he needs to leave sacred items sacred. Golf is simply a game....Tiger simply a man. Don't taint scripture by using it for entertainment purposes.

Okay....getting down off my soapbox now.

After seeing the fantastic new Nike ad (it's mentioned in another thread), I went back to YouTube to try to find this ad. I managed to find the ad today, so I'm posting it for those still interested.

My apologies in advance to those who are offended by this commercial ; my understanding is that most of the passage said by Jules, both in the movie and by Samuel L. Jackson in this ad, doesn't actually come from scripture, but I don't know this for certain. IMDB says the passage is mostly made-up.

C'mon Pulp fiction was good but scripture? Tarantino might have quite a following but it's not like he's the son of God or anything

. But seriously, there's a lot worse ways to taint scripture than reciting it in a movie or on a commercial. People are prejudiced and discriminated against and even killed, every single day all over the world because of the misuse of various scripture and you're worried about Mr Jackson on TV?

And it is strange, that nobody seems to be offended, that he shoots those kids after reciting his verse.

What a hypocritical BS! This is as absurd, as the Callaway Diablo discussion.

Where does this even appear in the Bible (or another religious text)? All of my Google searches for phrases in the passage take me to pages about Pulp Fiction or Tiger Woods.

Given that, I fail to see this as sacrilegious or offensive.

In the movie Sam Jackson opens the line saying:

"There's a passage I got memorized. Ezekiel 25:17...the path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee"

Other bits of the quote are not from Ezekiel 25, but are from Psalm 23.

Also, I think the movie Pulp Fiction is top notch. I think that the regurgitation of one of the most memorable lines from the film - for an ad - is tantamount to sacrilege.

In the movie Sam Jackson opens the line saying:

Ah, well there you go then. My searches were all for exact sub-phrases which don't match up with any of the strict biblical versions I saw just now.

Still rates a "meh" for me on the scale though.

I haven't seen Pulp Fiction in a long time and honestly didn't remember the line being from the movie.

When I first saw this ad on TV I immediately thought of the "Uneven Fairways" commercial that Jackson does.. talking about when black men were not allowed. Then seeing this ad soon after, it made me think they were saying "the black man is back for vengeance and to kick some ___".

I know that's dumb.. but it's exactly what I thought and I know I'm not the only one. It didn't offend me or anything.. I know it's just an attempt to get people excited about the return of Tiger and get people to watch. I just thought it was a really dumb ad. But I'm also just not a fan of Samuel Jackson at all and am ready to get him off the freaking Golf Channel.

Dude, being a white man married to a black women and having a bi-racial son I can't halp but think that I'm very glad I'm not sending him to a country a$$ school where people just don't know any better, it wasn't about uneven fairways and it wasn't about the black man! it was about dominance about Tiger being that guy that you bow down to,that all the other guy's fear to go against and the Rory Sabatini's don't know any better an run there mouth an then get crushed! it's about that you talked all that sh!& now what are you gonna do while I'm stepping on your neck type of dominance that the commercial was representing, and the marketing side! Golf is much more profitable with Tiger playing than with him Not.

I'm a fan of Pulp Fiction too. But since that movie I have lost my taste for Samuel Jackson. He seems to play off that character far too much. Like he's taken over that persona as his own in real life. It is quite annoying and drives me nuts. I suppose I shouldn't let it get to me that much, and I don't really. When I hear this commercial, or anything else of Samuel Jackson's these days, I let my mind wonder to something else.

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
