I played around with this a little more yesterday with better results.

I think the key for me is less about consciously using left side control but instead deliberately taking my right side out of it (sort of a tail-wags-the-dog approach, I suppose). I had the most success changing my right-hand grip:

- with the driver, my best hits were with a baseball grip and VERY light pressure.

- with my irons, I use an overlap but move my thumb over to the left side of the club. (I had been keeping it on the right, but discovered that it inhibited my ability to lag.)

Also, extension is key for me. If I make sure my right arm is over my left arm on the downswing, my ball striking improves dramatically. (That's from Jim McLean's 8-Step Swing.)

I'll post a video after next range session. Sheesh, can't believe a week ago I was thinking of quitting the game!

im having trouble differentiating pulling with the left shoulder from pulling with the left arm. i cant seem to see how they are not the same thing. any drills other than the horizontal swing to get this correctly in my mind?

Have you read the Master Key instruction several times, including the notes on page 46? These notes include the "left hand only" drill.

The "glove or hankerchief under your left arm pit" drill may be helpful. It must not fall out until well after impact. Pulling with the left arm will not trigger the correct body movements. You must use your left shoulder to pull your arms, hands, and club down and through impact.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
