Hi, here's my story.
I started playing golf again last May after a 7 year gap. when i stopped playing i was playing to 7 handicap. Last July i updated my equipment and brought a set of Adams Idea a3 irons, Insight xd driver, insight xd 3 wood.
This equipment was great to 'get me back started' in golf but i think i've out grown them.
I've recently swapped the driver and 3 wood for Ping G10s and they've taken me onto a new level.
The next step is my irons. I'm currently playing to 10 but want to go down lower than my 7 from a few years ago. I was amazed by the technology change in the time i was away and i hope this can help me again.
Any suggestions on what to buy.

I think you should start looking at something closer to a player's iron. New stuff worth a look would be Mizuno MP-52/57, Titleist AP1, Callaway X-22 Tour, Adams Idea Pro Gold and the new Nike Victory Red Split Cavity. There are a lot of other models/brands that would fit this category as well, but I just don't feel like typing that much. These are models that I have tested and liked for the most part. I personally am a Mizuno lover, but was really impressed with the Adams Pro Gold set as well (it's forged). I know a lot of people swear by Titleist as well. I thought you might be interested in Adams since you have played them before. Some people like to stick to a brand.

I would go with a set of callaway x-20's or talyormade r7's,not the tour models, tour models are fine if you want to work the ball but if your just hitting straight shots or your regular shot is a fade e.t.c go with non tour models.People grab tour irons a little to hasty.

I'm in the same boat as you, I just recently (6 weeks ago) started playing again after a 6 1/2 year layoff. I thought about buying new clubs, but I had previously played really well with what was in my bag. The only thing I did was take out an old 5 wood, and put a Mizuno 2 iron hybrid in the bag, and switch in my DCI 962's while I was getting re-aquainted with the game.

My game has come around really fast, and I thought about buying some new clubs, just for the sake of buying them, not because I "needed" them, and after trying a set of MP-33's, I put them in my bag. I played MP-14's for years, and I can't believe how much better the MP-33's react to the ball.

Anyways... around to my thoughts, there are some great used clubs out there, you might find something you like for a lot less money.

Cheers, Allan

ok,
bumping an old thread because it sort of pertains to my situation.

I have only played 4-5 rounds a year since 2002. Prior to 02, I was shooting consistently 86-90 with absolute strict rules. My irons are old and messed up after years of neglect and lending out for months at a time to friends.

I decided I was going to play a ton this summer and I found a great condition used set of Titleist 962s, steel shaft, regular. I purchased them VERY cheap. I know the 962s are for a mid to low handicapper but I thought they would force me to work harder.

However, now I am filled with buyers remorse because i think I won't be able to hit them. I worked in a pro shop when the 962 came out and I really enjoyed hitting them into the net.... but that 14 years ago. The guy i bought them from told me to bring them back for a refund i don't want them....

I am thinking I should give them a try for a while and if I can't hit them, I can unload them on ebay and break even... still it will be mighty blow to the ego.

What would you guys recommend?

Also,
I tried my dad's Taylormade rescue hybrids and I loved them. My bankroll is TINY. What would you guys recommend to be the best value in hybrids new/used/old doesn't matter. If you only had $100 per club for steel shafted hybrids which two would you choose and why?

Alright, I have always been a Titleist faithfull when it came to irons and still am with ball's but last yeaar I switched to Mizuno irons I tried all of the clubs out there and was very Titleist biased when I started I can bet anybody out there that if your not caught up on having your set from driver to putter and bag match that after a couple of session's trying different clubs that your most likely to end up with Mizuno irons even if you go with the MX line you'll get exactly what you need in playability I am very impressed with the irons this company makes you should give them a try before you pull the trigger.

we'll to be honest wit hyou the only ones I hit we're the MX25'S which I bought and the new ones the MX200'S I would save the money and buy the mx25's if that's what your interested in as personally Ii didn't notice a difference, that being said I did notice a difference in the MP57's from the MP52's the MP57'S we're better to me they felt better and looked better the MX25'S just worked better for me and they actually felt the same as the 57's just easier to hit.

    • Yea, it is a cult following. Especially with the YouTube golf personalities using them. They did great marketing in a space that not many other golf clubs are getting into yet. Especially for putters.  I tried them out at Golf Galaxy before; I can't stand them look of them.
    • Hit the driving range on lunch today. The LAB Putter Cult was going on and on at nauseum about that putt. They are 100% sure that the LAB putter is the reason he won the US Open. "When are you getting your LAB putter?" 😒 "JJ Spaun was unheard of before he got the LAB putter."  "The LAB putter is the reason JJ Spaun won the US Open." "Just watch, by the end of the year every PGA Tour pro will have a LAB putter."  etc... etc... etc...  I haven't seen this type of unconditional devotion to a club that will clearly change your game and save you strokes since the original "Hammer" ... POW! ... BOOM! ... WHAM! ....

    • Not sure it is a spoiled brat, there are hyper competitive people who exhibit rage issues. It probably is more a genetic quality over environmental.
    • Like spoilt brats really, same with tennis
