My current set of irons (Mizuno MP32) are to years old. They are in need of new grips and the heads need to be refinished due to countless dings from rocks.

Now the next bone head move might have sealed the deal for me buying new clubs, rather than replace............

I went ahead and cut the shafts and prepped them for refinishing. So now I have a full set of MP32s with about 2 inches of shaft!!!!

The Iron Factory quoted about $52 a club to do a full club (PX shaft, refinish heads, grips, check loft/lie). So at $364 plus shipping there and back, I am looking at roughly $400 to have 2 year old clubs refinished.

I am happy with the MP32s but I dont know if its a wise idea to finish 2 year old clubs that may only have had a 4-5 year life span anyway.

What are people doing these days..Buying new? Refinishing?

I would appreciate your thoughts/comments.

Here's what I'm thinking, we're both around the same handicap so I'll just tell you what I'd do.
With your 32's, they don't have a lot of new technology in them, and if you're hitting them well, you won't really need much of the technology involved in the new sets.
I'd go for it, irons are mostly about how you feel with them in your hands, I'd refinish unless you're scoping new irons in the future.

About buying gently used sets on ebay...I would have to have different shafts put in as well as having the loft/lie adjusted so I am better off with my current "heads" lol. But that is a good idea if I can find the exact specs.

I was looking at just buying new MP32s if I could find them. Not sure if they even make them but I am sure there is overstock somewhere.

The only other sets I would even remotely consider and only because of the hype associated with the clubs, is the AP2 and Nike Split Forged. I know they are not a muscle back but have heard a lot how people are jumping ship from musclebacks to these new forged irons. I am a decent ball striker and like the clubs I have now so changing clubs is a long shot....

I'm looking for some very good deals to appear soon.

I understand Disney's attendence is down 1/3 from last year. I heard on the radio that attendence for spring training baseball (cactus and grapefruit league) was down about 50% (they were discussing if this was a sign for major league attendence this summer.)

I saw a new Hummer H2 with a price tag of $8,000 at a dealership. Actually selling at a loss in hopes of getting some (any) money for it.

You know golf sales are in the toilet at the moment. Somebody is going to start slashing prices (especially on last year's models) just to get SOME inventory moving.

I am not a big fan of refurbishing clubs. If the heads are in great shape and you just want new shafts and grips that would be okay. If you play a bunch, especially with a forged club, the faces will get worn out and the grooves will be shot. You could get them refinished and the grooves sharpend, but I doubt that it would last. I base this on nothing other than my personal opinion, they might be brand new when they get them back, but how long will they last?

I would think for the money you would be better off just getting new. The Mizuno website lists the MP-32 in the 'signature' category so they should still be available to purchase new. Any authorized Mizuno dealer should be able to get them. You probably would just have to ask as I doubt a store or pro shop will have them on display.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

WHAT?!!!!! What were you smoking when you saw that Hummer?

Cannabis Sativa, LOL! The prices have come down, but not like that. I bought a MINT LOADED 2005 last year with 23,000 miles for 14K under blue book.

I saw this while shopping and thought of your issue. I don't know if you would like these, but the price would be right.

The Mizuno MP-60 irons feature the following:
The Grain Flow Forged, 1025 mild carbon steel construction head is 4% larger than the MP-32, for a 10% larger sweet spot area
Cut Muscle design produces a slightly higher ball flight in long irons, and a mid trajectory in the scoring irons
A durable double nickel chrome plated finish and modified U-grooves enhance feel and shot-shaping control

In my bag are
Hibore XLS 10.5*
Hibore XLS 22* 3i Hybrid
TA7 irons 3-PW, SW
CG11 60* LW VP #5 putter.

The closest new clubs to yours are the MP-67's. You can custom order them to your exact specs.

If you choose to refinish, with new shafts, grips, ferrules, you could end up paying close to that of a new set. Like another poster said, there are quite a few sets on eBay, you may find your exact specs there... I did with my MP-33's... It just took a couple weeks of patience.

Cheers, Allan

    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
    • IMO-the only thing entertaining was the relay race. Everything else was excruciatingly boring...or just  stupid, like the 14-club thing. Watching guys blade wedges into the water over and over is not at all interesting.
