I need to change grips, please add pro's and con's for either or both. Thanks!

I prefer the overlapping grip, mainly because it allows the hands to get a little more "involved" in the swing.

If you have small hands, shorter fingers, or simply have trouble controlling the clubhead, the interlocking grip also works great.

Most pros use a overlapping grip, but Nicklaus & Woods use interlocking....so that should tell you that it works well also.

In a nutshell, just use whatever seems the most natural and is most comfortable for you.

You can also try the baseball (10 finger) grip.

Small hands = Interlock
Average/Large Hands = Overlap

Personally I use the interlock and have average hands, but my fingers are fairly short, and I've been playing since I could walk. Different strokes for different folks.

I have average hands and use the interlock. Whenever I tried the overlap I felt like I didnt have much control and that i was going to throw the club. Try what feels best to you.

I, too, use the interlocking grip. Truth is I tried to change awhile back but I have been using that grip since I was 5, and anything else just feels wrong.

Speaking of the baseball grip, I know some instructors teach it to juniors due to their small hands. Are there any pros that play with this grip?

I heard Johnny Miller talk about interlock vs. overlap grips recently at the Honda Classic this past weekend.

I'm paraphrasing but he said around 85% of PGA Tour Pros use the overlap grip, but Tiger was an interlocker. Can someone remind me which grip makes it easier to play a cut with? Miller mentioned something about the interlock grip being the one where less of your hands are covering the handle and how that has a natural effect on your ball striking. What that effect is, I cannot recall....

Moe Norman was famous for playing with a baseball grip.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
