I just started 7 months ago and shot an 88 this past weekend...
I am decent with my striking, not the best but trying very hard...
I am playing well I guess for 7 months worth and no lesson,

I am 32 at 5'8" 180lbs and it seems like my distence are SO SHORT compare to the average player...
or is it all just in my head...
I hear people hitting thier 3 wood out to 250-260 yards... I can not do that I try to swing out of my shoes and the best was 230
let me know if my distence on clubs are good and my chocies are good...
or what would you change...
(to me right now I would change my wedges, was thinking about the new VR wedges... those thing look sweet)

I wouldnt worry about distance one bit... As long as you know your distances and can hit them... what does it matter which club you are using.

As you get better you will notice that you will start to gain distance in your long irons and fairway woods. If you were short anywhere... i would say that is where it is. But... once again... i wouldnt worry about it.

Edit: You may want to consider playing a different ball... those Cally Bites are marshmallows.

I don't think your distances are bad through the bag. I am maybe a 1/2 club longer with irons and wedges but that's about it. There are lots of people that can hit longer with all their clubs and that's great for them, but not everyone can. I am either the longest or second longest of all of the people I play with (about 10-12 different people), but do not consider myself very long. Length can be good, but only if you can control it. As a newer golfer you shouldn't be too concerned with distances yet. Lessons might help you with adding some distance. Another option is working on improving your strength and flexiblity to improve distances.

The one thing I notice is that you are playing stiff shafts in everything. It's very possible that these shafts are too stiff, which can result in lost distance because you are not getting the correct 'load' on the shafts and thus they are not releasing through the shot. Often times our egos tell us we need stiff shafts when in fact they are costing us strokes and/or distance. Also, because there is little consistency across the shaft industry, a stiff in one company might be stiffer than from another company, so each shaft brand and model have to be assessed differently (for example, the Graphite Design shaft in your 3 wood is pretty stiff and I believe it has a stiff tip, which could cost you quite a bit of distance if you're swing speed is not enough to properly load that shaft).

I don't see anything wrong. I probably have a little more spread in the mid-irons, but really all that matters is putting the ball on the green - who cares what you use to get it there. As a reference, here are my yardages:

playing MP60s after 6 months of golf is not a good idea. I've been playing for 16 years and i don't think I'd go with that.

Don't swing out of your shoes. Makes it worse. Go with this if you like mizunos: TM Burner Burner 3 Wood ping G10 3-4 hybrids mizuno mx200 irons - 5-p VR 52,56 wedges and most importantly, get fitted and take lessons.

First of all I would say that you are doing very well for someone who has played for 7 months without lessons. Basically you and I score similarly and I have been playing for several years.

As far as your distances I think your length is not your limiter. You are basically scoring at a bogey golf level but your distances exceed the general assumptions about a bogey player. The assumptions from the USGA are:
For the purpose of rating the golf course, the male scratch golfer is defined as someone who can hit their tee shots an average of 250 yards (including carry and roll) and can reach a 470-yard hole in two shots at sea level. The female scratch golfer can hit her average drive a total of 210 yards and reach a 400-yard hole in two shots.

A male bogey golfer has a course handicap of approximately 20 and can hit his average drive a total of 200 yards and reach a 370-yard hole in two shots at sea level, while the female bogey golfer has a course handicap of approximately 24, hits her average tee shot 150 yards with roll and can reach a 280-yard hole in two shots.

My distances are maybe a little longer than yours, but my problem is accuracy. Keep it in the fairway, hit the green, don't leave long lags.

I am playing the Hot Shot because it was helping with my slice with my old driver...
I am trying out ProV1 and Wilson 50 & Zip

as far as playing with the MP 60 I LOVE THEM
I still have my first set 7 months ago I got brand spakin new... Adams Idea A3
I could hit them but nothing as well as the MP 60 and for the Adams Hybrid I can not hit them to save my life... so that was when I went out to demo a lot of clubs and the MP 60 was the best feeling and best shot to shot for me...
so yeah I know I am a beginner and should not play MP 60 but those things are deadly accute for me... I may not be long, but now that I got a good swing done that I can repeat... I always putt for birdie on par 3 and if I am within 145 yards of the green I am on... (before I had to use my 3 wood and slow it down to play par 3's but now I took some time and work on my iron swing... it is money now)

I was having trouble with my wedges and could not hit them... but after this past weekend I found out what I was doing wrong, that was why I was able to post a 88...
Now only if I didn't have a +3 and +5 = (being stupid) on my score card last week I could have shot a 82 easy... but those are the mistakes I will not make again... trying to go over trees and through trees is not a good idea... boogie is better then a triple or +5 on the score card...

thanks all for the reply,
I just thought I was short on my irons...

by the way... I play stiff because it gives me more accuracy...
my Adams was regular and I could not hit them, and they felt loose at the bottom if you know what I mean... then I hit the stiff and it was night and day for me...

right now I just got to stop 3 putting when I have a birdie shot... (hate 3 putting...)
I put the Scotty Cameron away and going back to my Sabertooth for this weekend and see if I can post a better score with a different putter...)

I practice very hard every night, in my garage...

on my swing, trying to nail down my swing and how I should swing... it was a long and trying 7 months and I changed my swing like 20 different times, until I found my right footing, right ball position and slow take away and smooth swing, I don't swing out of my shoes, I said IF I swing out of my shoes I get 230 which for me does not matter, I stick to my smooth and very consistent swing Note: I do competitive Archery and I shoot pretty good, and I took what I learn from my 20 years of Archery and applied it to golf and make the learning curve a very quick transition for me.... Golf and Archery is pretty much the same... but I found golf to be more fun... I practice hard because both my brothers and brother in-law play golf and they always bet money, at least GREEN FEEs worth... so that is a lot of dough in the end... losing sucks... so I practice hard so I don't have to lose and play golf for free... Playing golf for free is always good in fact I play my next two rounds for free... this site ROCKS...

Wedges seem short compared to your irons and woods. If you hit your driver 250, I'd expect that your 56* would go farther than 70 yards. My yardages are:

Driver: 250 3W: 230 2h: idk 3h: 200? 4i:190 6i:165 8i:145 PW:125 SW: 95-100 If we hit the driver the same distance and most irons +/- 10 yards of each other, then why wouldn't we hit our SW's the same distance? As long as you know how far each club goes, I wouldn't worry about how long you are. Distance will come with a better swing. If you have a 143 yard shot and can confidently take out x-iron, then who cares how it gets there as long as it does?
I am 32 at 5'8" 180lbs and it seems like my distence are SO SHORT compare to the average player...

I have not met many people who can actually hit a 3 wood 250-260 consistently. Maybe half a dozen, if that. They all had a handicap of <5, so as a 17.5 I wouldn't expect the same results. As long as it goes straight and the right distance, it shouldn't matter.

If you are comfortable with your wedges (lofts, not brand), then I wouldn't change them. Try a bunch of wedges of the same loft if you like going 52*, 56*, 60*. I think it's easier with 3 wedges (including PW), so if it were my bag, I'd go PW, 52, 58/56 or PW, 54, 58. That's just me though.

The only issue I see with your distances are 3 and 5 wood distances compared to the driver. Your driver and iron distances are very similar to mine. I am 6' 240#. I would think your 3 and 5 wood would be a little longer, but I am the farthest away from an expert. My 3 wood and 5 wood are steel shafted, which are at least an inch shorter in shaft length, and I get about 10 to 20 yards more. I gave up on trying to get the distances I read on the internet, most are not objective and have alot of imagination. Just concentrate on your ballstriking and consistency, sometimes a little distance follows.

Again, Don't worry about other peoples distances.

    • Day 24: did a stack session. Worked a bit on downswing feels during breaks.
    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
