I used to be a great putter and hardly ever did as bad as I am doing lately. On almost every putt (even more so the longer ones) I come up about a foot short or sometimes more. So to compensate for that, my next putt I will stroke a little harder but then it rolls past about a foot or so. I have been practicing putting for about a half hour everyday either inside or at the putting green at the course. I have been told to maybe try a mallet style putter and not a blade like im using now.
So question is, I can't figure out why I dont come closer and fall so short.

I am also putting really bad at the moment.
Main problem is distance control.

I tried to change my putter, to see if it has any effect.

With a blade putter (Nike Unitized Tiempo) I have better distance control, and with a mallet putter (Nike Unitized Techno) I get better direction, but the distance control is even worse.

I was trying a feel-based approach. (imagining I'd roll the ball to the hole with my hand, and then just swing the flatstick with the same intensity)
Obviously not succesful.
Next I will try a more mechanical technique, dividing the space between my feet into sections, and measure the backswing.

Those are my problems too^
At the end of my round yesterday I started to aim for something certain behind the cup about 6 inches or so away, and twice it actually worked and I one putted. But I would like to be able to aim for just the cup in case the green is sloped severly.
Thanks for the help so far.

Gentlemen ,,,the first and foremost thing in putting is knowing your distance, this means you pace all putts over a distance you cant judge . I even pace 6 ft and they come up 9ft sometimes , for up hill pace them off and add 2 ft depending on slope , reverse for downhill ,,,it helps like you wont belive to know your distance before you stroke the ball , even if the length of your pace isnt a true yard , its still a yard in your mind . hopethis helps

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
