My son has been playing on and off for years, and is now asking me for advice on grip, setup, etc. This is miraculous, since a 14 year old listening to anything their parents say is pretty rare. The point is, I think he's going to start playing somewhat seriously.

He has an old graphite shafted set, half of which were cut down, that just won't work anymore. He is 6' tall and 225, and judging by the practice swings in the backyard yesterday, is generating some pretty healthy clubhead speed. He's a lefty, which makes things more complicated, and we have an ancient set of persimmons and blades that he wants to play this year.

My question is, should I let him have at it with those clubs, since its 50/50 whether or not the kid sticks with it, or should we buy him clubs now? If so, what would you recommend?

In my bag:

Cleveland Hi Bore XLS 8.5* X Stiff
Mizuno MP 650 13*
Halo 22 Deg Apex Plus 4-E Apex Plus Gap Wedge CG15 54 Deg CG10 58 Deg Anser 4 ProV1x

an old set of blades / permission woods will not inspire confidence and might cause him anxiety which could lead to him loosing interest. However, spending $500 on a set of clubs for him to only hold onto for a year might cause you some anxiety as well. Since I know nothing about your son beyond what you have told me, I would recommend you pick up a set of used clubs on this site, ebay, or your local pro shop (golf store). Also, get him some lessons. He will improve his game more taking lessons then he will with shiney new golf clubs.

If you are interested I have a set of graphite shafted Pro Select Irons 3-pw in the basement (Im left handed) with stiff shafts that are probably 10+ years old. Make me an offer on them.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

    • Ah.. my regular weekend league. Lol Scrambles are fine. Usually there's charity involved. So there's that. There are much worse events Im forced to attend twice a year.
    • Does Justin Thomas have a massively underrated short game? It seems every time I look up he's hitting it close from a tough lie after short siding himself. What masterful touch
    • I freaking hate them. Too expensive, cheaters, food sucks, too dependent on weather, I keep telling myself never do it again but I'm a dummy
    • I enjoyed the A-B-C-D scramble we did at Kittyhawk before it shut down. Yes. The point was to meet the other members and get the season kicked off. Nobody took it too seriously. At least with that group, cheating wasn't a big issue.  As the D part of A-B-C-D, I enjoyed getting to play with one of the Association's top players. One year I played with the city champ. Man could he hit a ball.  It probably isn't something I'd want to do more than once a year, but it has its place.
