So i am in the market for a new driver and a new hybrid. i am young (college), with high club head speed and above average distance, however i also have above average slice..i pretty much never hook the ball with my driver, but slice frequently. My handicap is probably right around 15.

As far as a new driver goes:
I like what ive seen and heard of the new taylor made burner, but have some questions about the shaft. i know its a little longer than normal, but thats ok with me because im 6'4" and have my irons extended and inch anyways! I also looked at the titlist 909 drivers or the ping rapture v2. what do yall think for me? i read somewhere that the TM burner has a 1degree closed face, with a slight draw bias, which may help me. i dont want to get a draw version, because im still improving and feel as though i will eventually straighten it out, so i dont want to get comfortable with a draw version to where ill have to use that for the rest of my life!

As far as the new hybrid:
My iron set only has 4-pw, so i think im either going to get a 3H or 2H (21 or 18 degree...what do yall think?). I love hitting my long irons, unlike most people. I often opt for my 4 iron off the tee instead of my driver because i hit it well, so i want a hybrid to get some more distance! i hit a friend of mines nike hybrid a year or two ago and loved it. i like the callaway big bertha diablo, but also am considering the TM burner hybrid, or even the ping g10. Any help is a appreciated!

Thanks guys.

Not really sure what you're looking for here... there are so many choices, and much of it is just player preference. I will say this... buy a slightly used or new driver of last years models and you will save a ton of cash. Same goes for the hybrid.

For hybrids... my favorites are Adams, Nickent, and Cobra... I like the ones that are a little smaller and more workable. I would get a loft that will go a distance between your 4-iron and next club which is probably a 3 or 5 wood. This will probably be something in the 18-22* range.

For drivers... just hit a bunch and see what you like... most companies non tour drivers have slightly closed faces... usually 0.5* or 1*... this won't teach you any bad habits, but should help with losing balls to the right (although not much).
My Clubs: Callaway FT-i Tour LCG 9.5° w/ Matrix Ozik Xcon 6 stiff; Sonartec GS Tour 14° w/ Graphite Design Red Ice 70 stiff; Adams Idea Pro 2h(18°) & 3h(20°) w/ Aldila VS Proto 80 stiff; Adams Idea Pro Forged 4-PW w/ TT Black Gold stiff; Cleveland CG12 DSG RTG 52°-10° & 58°-10°; Odyssey...

It just depends on your swing... I have a SS of about 105 w/ driver and a moderately quick tempo... I play stiff shafts (preferably with stiff tips) and a 9.5* driver. I used to play a 10.5* and it was a bit too high launch and I got very little roll. I gained about 5-10 yards with this driver. Just keep in mind the shaft is every bit as important as the loft... both will impact ball flight.

just a very basic starting point... SS 110+ ...8.5 or lower SS 100-110 ....9 or 9.5 SS 90-100 ...10 or 10.5 SS 80-90 ...11 or higher just keep in mind... some might swing 95 and need an 11.5, 12, etc.

What about the performance of some of the drivers I've named? Anybody whose tried all of them?

About your height or a tad more....~100mph swing speed with a slow tempo.

I really like the 10.5 degree G10 I'm playing now. At times, though I wish for a tad more tip stiffness, though. Overall, I'm happy with the club. I did have it ordered longer, though I routinely grip down to the "normal" length.

It's been a very forgiving club. I went from a low trajectory driver to this one....it's been a pleasing experience.

The PING G10 draw bias club doesn't set up too closed....perhaps this would help you. They work their magic with the weight positioning.

For a driver the 909 wont help you because it has a 1/2* open face. I would consider the Callaway fti in a 10* or a Taylormade driver where you can change the weights so when you get rid of your slice you can move the weights back.

I feel like the brand of driver as long as it isn't too old is all personal preference. The shaft and loft of the club is the most important. See if you can find a local fitter and have them take a look at your swing and how you hit the ball. I went to Perfect Swing by me and he fit me to a specific shaft and loft, I got lucky and he found a year old model of a mizuno head with the right loft and I liked it. So that would be my suggestion if you can, they usually waive the fitting fee if you buy the club.

Not much talk about hybrids.... I just purchased a Cobra DWS 3h 20*3/R. I got an '08, for about $65, new on ebay.

I have used the 2/R, and it was amazing. I have done quite a bit a of research on the hybrids, and it seems the Cobras are something special. I am even considering using a 1/R instead of a 3w....I am still trying to get my hands on one to test it.
It's the indian, not the arrow! But it sure is nice to have good arrows!!!!!

For a hybrid check out the Bobby Jones Hybrids, made by Jesse Ortiz. They are awesome. You can find them new on ebay for about $130 free shipping.

    • Day 24: did a stack session. Worked a bit on downswing feels during breaks.
    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
