I played a round today and hit my irons as crisp and as flush as i have ever hit them. Only problem, i was a club short on each one. I have lost about a club in distance and cant really determine why. Ball flight was pretty much on target. alignment was good. i am really flabergasted.

I am in my early 30s so i dont think that age has got me yet. Driver swing speed is measured around 105 on the swing monitor. My driving distance was once around 265-270. 5 iron 200. 9 iron 145. now i struggle with distance. any ideas? contemplating a swing analysis.

I'm still trying to get my distances down in my memory so I know for sure what I need to hit. My iron lofts have changed about 1* each, and I took half an inch off of my new irons. So basically, what I hit my PW last season, I'm know hitting my 9 or a weak 8. (around 145)

I have the same SS and numbers, except my 5-iron is 195 and my 9-iron is 140...

I would say you are probably getting old... I am 29 with a little one comming, and I am sure the second I turn 30 I will loose 10 yards, turn grey, and start to fall apart in general. seriously though... -have you switched balls -was it cold out -are you hitting on the toe or heel just a bit -has ballflight changed, higher or lower -are you hitting a slight fade or anything

might have been decelerating a bit. Thats happened to me before. I was trying really hard for a few weeks to keep a nice even tempo, then 1 week I started hitting my irons 10-15 yards shorter even though it was perfect contact. I was kind of quitting on my swing, but swinging enough to keep the ball going the correct flight but with no distance.

Id make sure you are accelerating through.

I suddenly lost distance a couple weeks ago and yesterday I figured out why: I had severely shortened my back swing.

My biggest problem was with my 3-wood. I had been topping it far too often, and I guess I got gun-shy. It carried over to my other clubs too.

Now I'm making sure to get a full turn and start generating power at the top of my swing, and the distance has come back.

You also might not be de-lofting the club like you used to. Maybe your hands are a little further back at impact than it used to be. Try getting your impact position with your hands a bit further up and see if that changes anything. You're gonna need to figure out how by yourself, be it ball position, or address position, grip, stance and such.

It could also be completely swing based and you're losing speed through some technique saps that could have developed, but none of us know your swing so can't say much about that. Maybe you're getting old too? Hope that's not it. Good luck!

If I was hitting them pure, I would rejoice at my newfound groove and take an extra club.

I'm down to a 10 handicap. At this rate, I'll get to scratch at 90 years old!

Not to hijack the thread but I was wondering this the other day. I made some swing changes over the winter and feel like my SS is faster and i am making better contact but my distances are the same. I was playing in the mid 40's so i was hoping the cold was the reason for no distance gains.

What distance gains might i see if it was say 80* instead of 40*?

I agree with Bogeyhitter25 & Beachbreak - nice and crisp usually means straight and straight usually means no BIG numbers. Cheers

    • Fair enough. By wiggly I just mean the bit about stepping hard or the like doesn't count. Like, what if the player says they plan on playing the lie with massive weight on the front foot and ball back in the stance to try ensure no bounce interaction to prevent the club getting sucked into the soggy turf before the ball, and it's only with ~80% of weight on the front foot that you can see water? But I was more wondering what the announcers were complaining about?
    • Shot a 48, with not lost ball, no penalties, no bunkers, no 2nd short game shots, and no three putts.
    • Day 5 - extremely long range practice session. Probably one of my best practice sessions ever. Doing things in slow motion is like 5x'ing the effectiveness of the practice. Also, I need these same "falling into lead leg" feels on my wedges. And guess what? Practicing this feel on shorter wedges is ALSO EASIER AND MORE EFFECTIVE. Combining much slower than full speed practice with shorter (50-90 yard) shot practice was really good. Change the picture on these shorter shots first. Feel like I'm keeping my arms as straight as possible on the backswing while hinging my wrists earlier is an incredible feel. I feel like this is doing stuff to my sequencing somehow? Much less rushed at the top because hinging was done at a reasonable time? One note someone made on my swing thread before I went on a hiatus was regarding this so I played around with it.  Clubs that don't require as much weight/pressure shift feel fantastic (driver/3-wood/hybrid), but that's almost always been the case.

    • Correct, just like relief from a sprinkler head; you can't take a giant stance to put it in play (unless of course that is genuinely how you play). If you take your normal stance and water is visible you get relief, if you have to jump to stand on one foot to get it to show no relief. IF the rule was that if you could get water to show at all, there would have been nowhere on that course anyone could play. I can't comprehend why the ruling has become so controversial, I think Sam called 2 officials to see if one would maybe be more lax than the other, but besides that he knew the rule which is why even he didn't make a huge deal out of it to either offical.
