How far do hybrids go

Hi guys, im thinking about replacing my woods with some hybrids, but im still relatively new to the whole hybrid idea and i was wondering whether anyone could confirm for me if you can replace 3 and 5 woods with hybrids and which ones could fill those roles.

I replaced my 5-wood with a hybrid... It is the 18* down in my sig. Generally a 5-wood will go about the same distance as a 17-19* hybrid, and a 3-wood could only be replaced by a 14-16* hybrid and you still might loose some distance. Yes, hybrids are meant as long iron replacements, but we NEED to stop thinking of our bags as having a set number of woods, hybrids, irons, or wedges... it is ALL about DISTANCE gaps. You can replace most woods with hybrids that will go similar distances... just as you can replace irons with high lofted woods, etc. The lofts I listed above are guesses, and different clubs will perform differently... just make sure you are happy with the distance gap from one club to the next. Going driver, 15* hybrid, 18* hybrid, 21* hybrid, iron or some such thing, might very well give you good gaps to work with, and if you hit hybrids better than FW woods, there is no reason not to swap them out.

Not true. Just ask Anthony Kim who had a 2H replace his woods. Hybrids are meant to replace almost anything in your bag. As Big_M stated, as long as the degrees are relatively the same and shaft length are similar, you should have no problems with distance gaps.

Hybrid goes the same distance with iron. Don't replace with with woods. I use muscle back( titleist zm), and only tried some1's hybrid(cleveland hybrid set) out on the range. I could be wrong.

Different hybrids are different. By design, most hybrids are designed to replace long irons and higher lofted woods (5 wood +). Adams has hybrids that are specifically designed to replace woods (such as the new Speedline series). It should also be noted that in most cases hybrids are longer than the irons with the same number on them. Based on personal experience here would be the comparison:

1H (around 15-16*) - 3/4 wood
2H (around 17-19*) - 5 wood
3H (around 20-21*) - 7 wood/2 iron
4H (around 22-24*) - 9 wood/3 iron
5H (around 25-27*) - 4 iron

The problem is that this comparison is not accurate across all brands and models. I have always found hybrids to be longer than irons by 1/2 to 1 full club, but in some cases they will be a very similar distance - it depends on the design, length of shaft and the loft. Like so many things in golf there are no hard standards that say a specific loft has to be a particular club so you'll see quite a bit of variation in the lofts on certain clubs and the associated club 'number'. The same with shaft length. Some hybrids have a shaft the same length as corresponding irons and others have longer shaft, similar in length to a wood.

The best thing to do is just check out some of the hybrids. Almost all of the major manufacturers make good ones, but not everyone likes them all. It's probably best to start with one (maybe even buying used one) and see if you like it. They are a little different to hit and for some people can take some adjustment time.

Well, I play hybrids instead of woods. I currently use an 18* and a 23* and those go 220 and 210 for me. I know I could get some more distance from a 3 wood (was actually thinking about trading out for a 4 wood) but these clubs get the ball up in the air, and give me some spin so they drop softer. It makes my longer distances that much more precise.

The hybrids will NOT go the same distance as your woods due to the shorter shaft, most of the time, I see around 1.5-2 inches difference. However, you can just get less loft to make up that distance, while the weighting will still get the ball up high spinning and you have a shorter shaft for better control.

Like PiKapp has also stated, I've noticed my hybrids go longer than their corresponding irons in the same loft, in my case, close to a full club longer.

Personally, the next purchase I'm making is the nickent 5dx 2 ironwood which is 15.5*. I need a bit more distance off that second longest club and I figured, it would be somewhere close to a 4/5 wood distance considering the shaft length and loft. Again, I love the forgiveness of the hybrid, the ease and versatility of use, and the way it drops at the end of my ball flight. Replacing hybrids with woods WILL work, you just need to make sure it fits the makeup of your set.

Looking at your handicap, might be time to shelve those ZM's and get some GI irons and 3-4 hybrids.

A hybrid will not go as far as a wood on a well struck ball. I carry a 19H in my 2i/5w hole and i hit a 5 wood at least 15 yards further in the air than a hybrid. But what you gain with the hybrid is playabillity, from both the rough and fairway. Hybrids are more verstitile than woods and are eaiser to play from bad lies. But with the hybrid you loose off of the tee. So you pick one or the other to suit your game, IMO. Not so much how far you can launch either style.

For me , I used hybrids to replace irons . However , I made sure that my hybrids were the same length and loft as the irons they replaced . A hybrid that replaces an iron should really go longer than the iron , but it should consistently go as long as a WELL STRUCK iron . If you hit a good 3 iron 220 but only 2 out of 10 times , then the hybrid should go as long but just more consistently . -- K.

I am the opposite. My long irons and woods aren't that long. my 4I, is 215 max. That is the longest I have ever hit, usually I'm around 185-190.I hit my 5I longer than that so I never use a 4I or 3I.

Same with my woods. My 5 wood is usually 220-230, and 3 woods is 220-240.

A 4H for me is 220-240, accurate. I can give it a litle extra and have confidence that it will sail past 230, or I can ease up and lett it fly to the 220 marker. I am no tour player, and I dont need to make Par 5 greens in 2 shots, so The only reason for me to carry a wood is for low stingers.

Try out different hybrids and see what gaps they replace, maybe you'll get lucky and be able to replace 4 clubs with 3 hybrids.

This can be a convoluted and contradicting topic.....just read some of the posts in this thread....


Hybrids are the first club type that I've had such wide ranging results with....some are more "woodish".....some more "ironlike"....shaft lengths are all over the place so is weight distribution.

You've really got to go and hit as many as you can....something that I didn't do that much off....just lucked out and hit a playing partners sticks and was highly impressed with the results (for my game) and ordered the same type.
