My course was renovating tees a few years ago, and the 18th played about 80 yards shorter than normal: from about 400 to about 320. Slightly downhill.

A few other holes were affected as well: one of the 270-yard par fours (drastically uphill though) was playing about 200 yards.

We were instructed to take our handicap for that hole. In other words, the uphill one was like the 14th handicap hole, so if your course handicap was 14 or higher you were supposed to write down a bogey. If 13 or less, a par.

Same was true on about seven of the holes that were being renovated. You could still hit golf shots, of course, but you were instructed to write down the appropriate score.

Perhaps that course had something in play for that hole as well, making "what you got" almost irrelevant except for personal satisfaction.
