okay,
so I can get a set of "average" x-14s from Callaway preowned for $200 shipped.

I can also get a pretty beat up. Here is a thread with the pictures of them:

So, the pluses of the x-14s are:
1) callaway name
2) callaway preowned guarantees

pluses of BH-5
1) cheaper
2) I've at least seen the condition

My concern is callaway preowned definition of "average." After scouring ebay, I've found several sets of x-14s that sell for around $175.

opinions are much appreciated.

Used set of X-14's are not worth that much. Both deals suck in my opinion.

I got a set of Big Bertha Golds off the Callaways Preowned site about five years ago. They extended them and put the lie 2 deg upright and new grips on. Great price from what I recall. I would buy from them again in a heartbeat. Seems mine were "Average" condition. No better than "good" I am sure. I remember being skeptical at any rate before ordering. My irons looked almost brand new when I got them.

At least buying the clubs from Calloway's pre-owned program gets you the guarantee and an inspection.

If those are the only choices, I'd go the X-14s. Golf buddy of mine likes them a ton. I don't feel the BHs can hold a candle to them.

Just to give you a little bit of inside information. The Hogan BH-5 is the Callaway X-14 Pro Series. They are the exact same specs except they have the name Hogan on them. But since Callaway owns Hogan, I would call it them the same club.

Callaway Pre-owned is not going to sell you junk. Plus if they are still running the spring test drive you can always send them back and get your full refund. The prices on the X-14's have gone up. The first week of March I bought a set of them with the uniflex steel shaft, standard everything Like New for $299. 6 of the 8 irons were still in the plastic. The price for a used set seems high, but you can always check the pga value guide and see what they are worth too.

Then its best left to inside information

. Did Callaway make the X-14s in a offset model like I've seen in the BHs? Talk about ugly!

Callaway Preowned rocks. The way Callaway runs their entire operation rocks. Before committing to the X14's, check out the X12's. IMO, they are a better stick, and since they are an older model, probably cheaper.

The X-14 Pro Series (BH-5) has less offset than the X-14 regulars. The offset look doesn't bother me much as long as the club performs for the swing I have. Think of the Pro Series like you would the newer generation of Callaway irons. For example the X-22 and X-22 tours: The X-22 would probably be used by a higher handicap because of the higher offset and more forgiveness. The X-22 Tour might be used by descent players with a repeateable swing and good ball strikers. The offset is used to help get the ball airborn and to some extent it helps to get the club face squared. I previously played the X-14 Pro Series but after 3 kids and a home, my playing time took a dive so I bought a set of X-14 regulars.

hmm... the x12s are cheaper. In your opinion what makes them superior?

The X-12's are cheaper solely because they're older. I played the X-12's for several years, at one point I "upgraded" to the X-14's. I couldn't wait to get back to the X-12's. For me, the performance was just better. At the very least there was no improvement between the 12's & the 14's. At least not $500 worth. If you want straight, long, soft shots, you can't go wrong with the X-12's. I assure you there are days when I wish I still had them. Of course I could say that about just about every set of irons I ever played... except those Ti-100's, now they were shovels.....

    • Played 9 yesterday at Cape Ann in Essex, MA. Played awful with maybe 4 really good shots but the course is so beautiful being right on the water it's hard to be to upset. I haven't practiced in forever so I'll need to get going on that.  Been better getting to the gym since I've been out here in NH. I came out from Minnesota for my well being so I figured I should be working on just that. Still hovering around 226 which surprises me as my sister in law feeds me quite well. Excited to be back east for the Celtics coronation. Go Celts!!!
