Hey guys
Mostly a reader on the forums but figured i need some advice

I am a decent player, I can make a lot of good shots but am very inconsistent which usually leads to me hitting in the 90s. But enough of that i was at the range the other day and was just hitting an awful bucket, shanks, thins fats, you name it i did it. So i switched from an interlocking grip to a baseball grip and immediately started hitting pure shots. It was pretty weird. It was 50/50 if it went straight or I did something crazy and pulled it a lot.

So i guess my question is can a grip really make a huge difference in your swing? and just on a side note, any drills i can do to stop pulling the ball?
thanks

Hey guys

Huge difference.

Baseball grip is going to give you a bit less power in the long run through. Baseball grip typically puts the right hand in a very strong/active position and if that right hand activates the face is going to hood shut and you will pull a ball badly as a consequence. I would strongly recommend an overlapping grip. Just drop your right pinky on top of your left index finger and put both hands basically neutral on the club. That will take the right hand out of it, make the level a little bit longer for more power, and force the left hand to do its job. Good luck.

it's fine to use the baseball grip. Just make sure your hands stay close together and do not spread apart. If they become separated , they will not work together and will cause all kind of bad things to happen.

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

if your pulling shots, your swing path is off.
your swing path is going out to in. i notice i do this sometimes as well.
usually happens when i try to murder the ball with my strength rather than my swing. luckily i usually cut the ball rather than just pull the shot. one thing that might help you is to try and hit a draw shot. focus on how to control your swing path . (check your shoulder alignment)

Oh yeah. A grip too weak will help cause you to hit it right and vice versa. I recommend a grip where the V's formed by the thumb and forefinger of each hand point almost to the right shoulder(for a rh golfer).
Also, grip softly in the fingers.

    • Three great shots from McIlroy's group (Smith and the US Am Champ) on 12.  The amateur won closest to the pin, although I doubt the group had a bet going.
    • I thought complaining about Fleetwood's appearance was my schtick   For real though, I agree with you, and when I see that, especially in a major, I'm confused.  When I play in a multi-day event at my club, I plan my clothing in advance because I want to look my best.   If no one else, their clothing sponsors should do this for them.  I think Nike used to do this with their stable -- I used to look forward to seeing their posts on the Facebook before majors to see how Tiger and Anthony Kim and friends would be dressed. Meanwhile, Jason Day is dressed fairly blandly today.  Who saw that coming?
    • The hell is Thomas Fleetwood wearing? He looks like a divorced dad from 1998. Even the shoes are hideous
    • I was wondering this and haven't seen it on today's broadcast OR yesterday's, but apparently Cabrera did show up.  He currently has the third highest score for the week and is playing his last hole of this year's event.  I'm not particularly keen to see him, but I was wondering if he was present, and he seems to be.
    • Hatton hit 18 GIR.  That's incredible.   Rory's tee shot on #8 reminds me of a TV show, Get Smart, that I enjoyed watching as a kid.  The protagonist would often say "missed me by that much."  Rory missed avoiding the bunker by that much.
