So I am trying to get my handicap down to somewhere near a 10 this year and I think that the one place new clubs could help me is in the wedge department and practicing consistently with them. I have right around $100 to spend right now. My question is should I go for a 52,56,60 Adams Watson set for $99, or should I get a Vokey or Cleveland 52 and 56 and just use my old lob wedge until later in the summer. I want these wedges to last a few years down the road. I have read all the reviews on the Adam's set and they seem extremely varied. I think most of the user reviews are skewed because they are by brand new golfers that have never tried any others. I would love some opinions on what you guys think. My thoughts from reading everything are that the Adam’s set is a great value and just a little lacking in the quality/control department, but I really don't know obviously. Please let me know if you have any personal advice or experience on this. Thanks in advance!

Researched the wedges myself recently. Have a set of Dunlop BeCu wedges I want to upgrade. I decided on the Cleveland DSG Gunmetal 588's. Found mine from a golf shop on Ebay. Brand new for $209 (60 lob, 56 sand, and 52 gap). The same price is on Edwin Watts. Normally $109, they are marked down to $69. Read up on them and they sound like awesome wedges. Heck of an upgrade I am expecting. They are arriving tomorrow. Below is a link....

To me, wedges are like putters. It is all about you and your preferrence. What works for me may or may not work for you. That being said.....

I really like the Cleveland CG14 and Mizuno MP-T Series. I had the CG14 in 47.06, 56.14, and 60.08. I traded my 47 and 60 for the MP-T 47.06 and 51.0. I ordered them fitted like my irons. The difference is AMAZING! From 120-90yrds out I was within 12' everytime! I just picked the 47 up on Thursday, played with it on Friday and it felt like an old friend.

So, whichever club you decide, get it fitted. To my understanding, the Adams set isn't as easy to adjust. Take your $100 and save a little more while shopping and researching the loft, bounce, and brand.

I bought the Adams set for this season,
Previously i had a 52° Tommy Armour, 56° Vokey SM and a 60° Top-Flite.

I never liked to have different brand - they felt and behaved differently. I then decided to get three wedges of the same brand and model. I just happened to find the adams set and thought that 80$ is worth a try - Tom Watson wouldn't (hopefully) put his name on them if they were useless, and if they happened to be useless it was only 80$.

Now a short review:

I think the heads are a bit to light (I will fix that with lead tape later).
The club head looks nice upon address.
There is a nice feel upon impact.
It generates more than normal (for me) amount of spin (not as much as the vokey though)
It's easy to play shots with an open club head (the tommy armour I had was impossible to do that with)
They all work good in the sand.

I think they are well worth $100, I will probably keep these another season and then get fitted with some nice wedges. But until then these work perfect for me.

I agree with Damien45, wedges are like putter, very personal as to what you like. That being said, I play Mizuno wedges, I prefer the feel of a forged wedge. If you are trying to get your handicap down, I would suggest you spend a little on your wedges. If that means buying one now and one several months from now, so be it.

IMHO, improving your short game is the fastest way to improving your scores.

Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?

I say add a Cleveland or Vokey to your bag and then add another when funds will allow. The new $99 Scratch wedges are nice too. I play the Scratch forged wedges and they have been great.

I would add the 52 now then add a 56 or 58 later. I only play 2 wedges and have always done so. I first learned how to hit any shot I needed with a 52. I learned every shot in the book with it from 110 yards and in. I can hit high flops to low runners with it and it really helped me to become a better wedge player. The only place I didn't use it was out of the trap unless I had a long bunker shot that required it. Hitting such a wide variety of shots with it made me learn great distance control in my swing and also gave me great feel and confidence around the greens. After I gained confidence in every shot, I started using the 60 in more places besides just the sand, and I now have a whole new set of shots that I can play that are just variations of the shots I was playing with the 52.

i completely agree with you...give someone who's a 15+ handicap a set of 3 wedges and unless he learns very quick will have a tough time getting his feel down than if he had one at a time or just two of them to work with and try an array of shots into and around the green with. I had a 54 and still have a 54 in my bag that i use from flops to bumps and love it around greenside bunkers...

I agree that touch is difficult to get used to with all the different wedges, but I started with a 52,56,60 so there wouldn't be a change. I went down to the shop today and picked up a Vokey spin milled 52-08 and a 56-10. I had a Ping G5i putter to trade in and got them at a good price. They were both used. The 52 is an oil-can and you can tell that it is used because some is rubbed on the bottom, but definately not used much cuz it doesn't have any scratches really and the grooves look good. The 56 is a raw finish and literally looks brand new without a single scratch. I got them for $60 a piece and got $60 trade for the putter, so it was not a bad day at all! I was just going to get a new 56 and keep the older 52 until I could spend some more money, but found this 56 and it looked and felt just as good as the new one, so I figured why not pick up the 52 also. I'm gonna leave the old 60 in the bag because I really like using it out of some bunker lies, but I don't use it much anyways.

Those are good wedges! I personally went with the ones I did because of the sole interaction with the turf. Again, a personal preferrence thing.

Since you got the Vokey SM, you can have the lie adjusted really easily. If you know what your iron fitting specs are, look at having that done. Like I said before, having your wedge match your irons (lie adjustment, length adjustment, grip, ect) makes a HUGE difference!

    • So I am aware that "the committee is allowed to set its own standards of player conduct in a code of conduct adopted as a local rule" (rule 1.2b) I also understand that there are some aspects that are allowed to be entered, and some that are not allowed.  My question specifically is: In which form does this code of conduct need to be available? Is it enough for someone to say "that's part of our code of conduct", or is it a requirement, that the code of conduct is in written form? Also, is there a need that the local rule points to the code of conduct in any way?   For better understanding: I'm playing competition and the next course that we play has a "no smoking policy". I don't have a problem with it, as I don't smoke anyway, but one of my team-mates does, and someone told him "You'll get disqualified if you smoke on the course".   Now I have looked at their local rules and there is no reference to a "code of conduct". I'm not sure if they even have an official "code of conduct" that states that smoking is not allowed.   I fully agree that he SHOULD respect this request from the club, but I am wondering if the club would really be allowed to DQ this player for this, if it's not properly documented in their local rules/code of conduct?  This is an official national amateur tournament, so not just something organized by a club for its members.
    • A few months back I purchased the following swing aid on Amazon ($130). It is solidly made of steel and heavy and stable in use. I use it both at the range and at home. Swing Plate Dual PRO by Jamie Brittain - Swing Analyzer Aid - Fits Standard 8mm Alignment Rod Sticks - Teaching Swing Plane Perfector - Indoor/Outdoor Golfing Practice. This winter I set a goal for myself to improve my backswing/downswing to be more consistent and on plane. I had a two way miss with my approach shots this past golf season. I have a hitting set-up in my garage, but I needed something to provide feedback while swinging the club. I came across the Swing Plate while browsing YouTube.   I set it up with the correct angles for my 8 iron. I started out with just the back rod in place, which prevents me from getting too far inside on the backswing. Started out slow and as I got comfortable increased my swing speed. Now I also came across a YouTube video on building a better backswing and getting more width in the backswing and added that to my practice. That video is here:    This video is a bit wordy since you are basically a fly on the wall as Ian gets a lesson. It took a few replays to be able to get the substance of the instruction. It was well worth the effort. Over the last two weeks I have been able to get out on the course and gauge how successful my practice has been. Overall, my consistency with approach shots has improved greatly. Incorporating the added width in my swing has also added a few yards to all my clubs.  What has your off-season training been like?
