Captains choice.

Just a general question. Played in a captains choice on Monday and the winning team fired a 50 on a par 72. That's birdie on all the 3 and 4's a d eagle on the 5's. Feasible for amateur golfers? I'm not worried cause I didn't win but a score that low suprised me

Were handicaps factored in and the net score a 50 or was that outright? Was there any trash for sale?


If that was just straightaway golf.....then that is a stellar score. Sometimes you'll get a team that will buy mulligans and any other trash available....and then take indecent liberties......not saying they did....just seen the results.

Search this forum for best 4 man scramble ever... There is a guy talking about it.

One guy was is a 2 handicap said he and 3 others (with a total combined 5 hcp) scored -21 once.

Another guy who is a +4 said him and 3 other scratch golfers have shot -23 before.

They let you buy mulligans.. At least thats the way it was at one tournament where I worked. For like 50$ you could get 2 mulligans, a closest put entry and something else. Just an extra way to make money for the cause.

So captains choice is identical to a scramble? Then their is no way handicaps could be involved.

Many of these Captain's Choice formats are done as fundraisers for some charitable event.....the goal being to pay for a few prizes and then the rest for the cause. In these formats it is customary to sell mulligans....so many dollars each or so many for a 4. Each member of the team can buy the maximum amount and then during the course of play they can use them. They can be used to virtually guarantee birdies in many groups.

There are other fundraiser / score reducers....for instance there are Tee Busters. The team or individual can pay whatever the rate is to purchase the right for them to tee off from the forwardmost tee on a given hole. I and many of the guys I've played these events with commonly refer to these enhancers as trash. It's not meant to be degrading....just doesn't really equates to a teams ability. Parity isn't reached unless all teams by all available trash. It's great for raising $$$$ for charity, though.

Perhaps it's a Southeast thing.....as I've done this in the scrambles that I've played in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

Yeah, what I am saying is in another thread. Two posters (one who is a 2 and the other who is a +4) said their best scores in scrambles are -23 and -21. So if the OP was wondering if it's possible then it is.. But that team would have to be STACKED like the two teams I was saying were..

The guy with the 2 had a combined team HCP of 5 (their match had NO HCP involved, but between 4 guys that means the avg handicap was 1.25) and they shot a -21 when they "holed out from the fairway and made like 4 50ft putts". The guy with the +4 (had 3 other scratch golfers as partners) shot a -23. All I am saying is yes it's possible to shoot -22. The team that did is either a) stacked with scratch golfers or b) lied or c) bought mulligans.

Last one of these events I played in was a handicapped tourney....and I'm not talking about how we all played as they kept delivering free beer to us at almost every hole.

Each player on the team submitted their offical handicap upon entry. This was used to determine a team handicap ( I think they averaged the hcps among the players on each team). This team handicap was deducted from the score we submitted and a net score was posted on the scoreboard. Ours was 54.33....not so great considering. This was not a serious golfing event, mind you, just a bunch of guys off work and blowing off steam on a great local golf course.

Sounds like a lot of fun. You have to watch the charity events where they serve free alcohol, especially if they have an auction afterwards. You can find yourself withe teenage kids and a $4,000 play structure.

This particular event was not a charity fundraiser. It was held as a customer appreciation event that a local industrial business was holding for it's customers. I felt the appreciation!!!!
